questions & answers

The following rodents are kept as pets:
Dwarf hamsters, golden hamsters, teddy hamsters, coloured mice, gerbils, coloured rats, degus, chinchillas and guinea pigs.

(Rabbits are classified as lagomorphs, which is why they are not mentioned above).

In the classification system, rabbits are not rodents, but hares. It is therefore technically incorrect to refer to rabbits as rodents.

Incidentally, rabbits are not hares either, although we often say dwarf hare in colloquial language. Hares are nest fledglings (the young are born with fur and open eyes), rabbits are nest hoppers (they are born naked and their eyes only open after about 10 days). Rabbits also have much larger ears and stronger hind legs.

From the main food for small animals to the right care products - we have a heart for rabbits, guinea pigs, degus, mice & co.

In our online shop for small animals - the name given to all rodent species and rabbits that we keep as pets - you will find a considerable selection of articles for the various needs of these pets. Did you know that there are almost as many rodents and rabbits in Swiss households as there are dogs? Rodents have also touched our hearts for a long time, which is why we are also incredibly proud of our own degu breed in our shop in Lyss. In the zoo-roco.ch online shop you will also find a wide range of selected products for keeping rodents - let yourself be inspired.

Main feed, supplementary feed and hay - species-appropriate feeding for every animal

In our online shop zoo-roco.ch you will find the right selection of main food for every animal species. rabbits, guinea pigs, degus, gerbils, coloured mice, dwarf hamsters, golden hamsters, rats and chinchillas all have different needs. What they all have in common is that their teeth are constantly growing back, which they counteract by eating enough food. This is why hay and straw, as well as the right feed mix for rodents and rabbits, are so vital. Make sure that you provide your rodent with well-structured hay. This means that the hay should be composed of coarse and fine grasses. When it comes to treats, it is particularly important for degus to ensure that they do not contain fructose (carrots, apples, etc.), as degus are diabetic. The following applies to all other rodents - treats can be used in a targeted manner to teach tricks or to tame the rodents. Order conveniently in our online shop and have the food delivered to your home.

And another tip from us - freeze herbs and loose feed mixtures for 24 hours to eliminate any food moths and their larvae - this process is not dangerous for the rodents. Feed moths can occur from time to time and are only a sign that the feed mixes have been untreated and carefully dried.

Stables and enclosures - for indoors or outdoors

Guinea pigs and rabbits can be kept outside all year round in our country. It is important that they can stay in a sheltered, windless place. You can find suitable outdoor hutches in our shop. When keeping rodents indoors, we attach great importance to enclosures that exceed the legal minimum dimensions - because happy rodents are simply more exciting to watch. The information in our shop will certainly help you to choose the right cage - but if you are unsure, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Furnishings - the highlight in rodent husbandry

Setting up a new enclosure - whether for degus, coloured mice, hamsters, rabbits or guinea pigs - is a passionate affair. We are absolutely dedicated to furnishings and are always endeavouring to find new items and try them out in our shop. Take a look at the furnishings section in our online shop - you will find a large selection of houses, hiding places, sand baths, tunnel systems, floors, running wheels and much more. When choosing bedding, it is important to ensure that it is either burrowable for rodents, i.e. does not collapse when digging tunnel systems, or sufficiently absorbent and odour-binding for rodents doing their business somewhere. We would also like to draw your attention to our adventure bedding, which makes foraging and therefore activity in the cage much more natural. Occupation is an important issue when keeping rodents, as the little fur noses are mostly occupied with foraging in the wild. So offer your pets the opportunity to forage for food in a varied way.

Care & hygiene - for clean enclosures and a shiny coat

A clean enclosure is extremely important for small animals and their health. In addition to urine and faeces, which are deposited by small animals and sometimes cause unpleasant odours, food residues and gnawed wood are also items that require regular cleaning. Rodents' claws should also be constantly checked and trimmed if necessary.
