Lamp systems in terrarium keeping

Everything you need to know about lighting systems for terrariums – for reliable lighting in your terrarium

With the right lighting systems for your terrarium, you can provide light, heat and – depending on the species – UV light exactly where it is needed. Whether T5/T8 systems, LED light strips, reflector domes or practical clamp lights: a suitable system ensures safe installation, uniform illumination and stable conditions in the terrarium. A well-thought-out setup is particularly important for reptiles to ensure that the sunbathing area, shaded areas and daylight rhythm are just right.

At Zoo Roco, you will find lighting systems for different terrarium sizes and habitats – from compact sets to powerful solutions for large tanks. Popular brands such as Arcadia and Lucky Reptile stand for quality, good workmanship and reliable technology.

Which lamp systems are suitable for which setup?

T5 systems & light bars

Ideal as basic lighting for bright, even illumination – especially in planted terrariums or longer tanks. With the right tubes (e.g. daylight or UV – depending on requirements), the light can be controlled very precisely.

LED systems

LED light strips are energy-efficient, durable and make the terrarium really bright. LEDs are often the first choice for plants and natural colour rendering – they do not usually replace UV.

Dome lamps & reflectors

Perfect if you want to place heat or UV spots with pinpoint accuracy. The reflector focuses the light downwards and improves efficiency – ideal for a clearly defined sun spot.

Clamp and clip lamps

Flexible, quick to install and ideal for smaller terrariums or as additional lighting. Ensure that it is securely fastened and positioned at a sufficient distance to prevent heat build-up or the risk of burns.

Tips for selection and safety

  • Check compatibility: The socket, wattage, ballast/transformer and lamp type must be compatible.
  • Plan zones: Warm/bright sunny spots plus cooler retreat areas are often crucial.
  • Protection for climbing species: lamp protection baskets prevent contact with hot light bulbs.
  • Use a timer switch: For a stable day-night rhythm and consistent routines.

FAQs about lighting systems in terrariums

Do I need a UV lamp system?

Many reptiles benefit from UVB, especially diurnal species. Whether and how much UV is necessary depends greatly on the species and habitat.

T5 or LED – which is better?

T5 is ideal for broad illumination (UV also possible, depending on the tube). LED is particularly bright and economical – often ideal for plants and daylight, but usually without UVB.

How do I position lamps correctly?

Position lamps so that a clear sunny spot is created without overheating the entire terrarium. It is best to measure the temperature at the spot and in the cool zone regularly.

How often should I change light bulbs?

The performance of UV lamps in particular declines over time, even if the lamp is still lit. Replacement intervals depend on the product (follow the manufacturer's instructions).
