A large enclosure contributes significantly to the well-being of the birds, as it allows them to fulfil their natural urge to move around. Ideally, the enclosed habitat offers enough space not only for hopping and climbing, but also for flying. Depending on the bird species, enclosure sizes of 100 cm or more are recommended. This is the case for ornamental birds such as budgerigars, canaries, zebra finches or lovebirds. For large parakeets such as cockatiels, we recommend an aviary with a length of 120 cm.
The bars should always be horizontal for climbing parrots. The distance between the individual bars and the thickness of the bars should be adapted to the bird species.
For finches and canaries, the bars can also be vertical.
It is important that the location of the enclosure is quiet and flooded with light, ideally near a window, but without being exposed to draughts. The birds should not be exposed to smoke, noise or the nuisance of other pets in this environment. An undisturbed night's sleep is also essential for the animals. The enclosure should be against a wall and not accessible from all sides, which reduces stress for the birds.
