Bird sand (digestive aid!) or other commercially available bedding for birds is suitable as a floor covering. Beech wood bedding, forest flooring or corn pellets can also be used. Different types of litter look nice and offer the birds variety.
Perches and roosting perches should be made of wood and not plastic; they must be springy and arranged in different thicknesses and orientations in the enclosure. The diameter should fit the bird's foot. Sand tubes are prohibited under Swiss animal welfare legislation. They cause injuries to the foot pads. Natural branches are well suited. They allow the birds to exercise their feet naturally and are also used to sharpen their beaks. Caution: various natural woods are poisonous or, in the case of fruit branches, sprayed. Parrots in particular have a strong need for gnawing and must be offered plenty of natural branches and possibly additional natural softwood boards.
Bathing facilities are prescribed for all birds in the Animal Welfare Ordinance. Depending on the bird species, clean water is offered daily in a bathing house or bathing bowl. Some birds like to be showered with a shower head.
Birds can also be offered a bowl of fine sand on the ground for a sand bath.
