Everything you need to know about fresh food for pet birds in the Bird Shop
Fresh herbs and green plants are a valuable addition to the daily diet of pet birds. They bring natural variety to a bird’s daily routine, encourage pecking and nibbling, and support species-appropriate behaviour in the cage or aviary. At Zoo Roco, you’ll find a selection of fresh food plants such as chickweed, chicory, lemon balm, field lettuce, Golliwoog and Flumi Ampel – ideal for budgerigars, canaries, cockatiels, exotic birds and other pet birds.
Fresh food for a varied bird diet
Many pet birds love fresh greens. Chickweed, lemon balm, lamb’s lettuce and other herbs add variety to their diet and can be a useful supplement to their daily main feed. The birds pluck at the leaves, peck at the plants and engage naturally with the fresh food on offer.
Chickweed, chicory, lemon balm and field lettuce
Chickweed is particularly popular with many pet birds and is ideal as fresh green fodder. Chicory adds extra variety to their diet, whilst lemon balm, with its aromatic leaves, is a favourite for pecking at. Field lettuce is a lovely addition to a fresh diet and can be offered in small quantities, depending on the species of bird. Make sure you always feed fresh herbs that are clean, untreated and in appropriate quantities.
Golliwoog and Flumi hanging basket as natural enrichment
Golliwoog is a popular food plant for pet birds. Its succulent leaves are perfect for nibbling and can be offered directly in the birdcage. The Flumi hanging basket is also ideal for adding a variety of fresh greenery. Hanging plants or hanging baskets provide additional opportunities for activity and encourage the birds to actively search for their fresh food. You’ll also find in our shop as well as seed mixes that you can grow and feed yourself.
Suitable branches for pet birds
For many pet birds, branches from hazel, willow, birch, apple, pear, maple or unsprayed berry bushes are suitable, for example. The twigs should be thoroughly checked and cleaned before being offered to the birds. Branches with leaves provide entertainment, natural perches and encourage nibbling. Unsafe or unknown tree species should not be fed to the birds.
Note on branches, leaves and suitable trees
Fresh branches with leaves can also provide a valuable activity for pet birds – however, they are not available in this category. If you wish to offer your birds natural branches as well, you should only use suitable, non-toxic and untreated branches. It is particularly important that the branches are of organic origin or are guaranteed not to have been sprayed, fertilised or contaminated with pesticides. Do not source branches directly from busy roads, field edges or sprayed orchards.
