He is called as Aquarist, Fish Keeper, Aquarium hobbyist or Aquarium or fish enthusiast. A feminine form is not common. Ichthyologist (someone who studies fish) would actually be the perfect answer. To do well with aquaristics, you would have to study the fish and learn what works well to keep them optimally.
Aquaria?
Remember that 10% must always be deducted when calculating the number of fish.
The best-known brands for aquariums and aquarium combinations are JUWEL and EHEIM.
However, Oase, Aquael, Sera, Superfish and Dennerle also offer aquariums in their range.
We also work together with aquarium manufacturers who offer customised products. This means that we can also offer unusual shapes for aquariums or special colours or wood variants for aquarium furniture.
If you cannot find the right aquarium in our shop, please give us a call or e-mail us. Together, we are sure to find the perfect aquarium for your home.
Aquascaping?
- Aquarium tweezers and scissors: These tools allow for precise placement of aquatic plants, as well as cutting and trimming of plants and other elements in the aquarium.
- Aquarium spatulas: spatulas are used for smoothing the substrate and also for removing algae from hard surfaces in the aquarium.
- Water flow pump and filter: Controlling the water flow is crucial for a healthy aqua scape. A suitable pump supports water circulation and nutrient distribution in the aquarium.
- A heater to keep the water temperature constant.
- For cleaning and water changes: ground cleaner, hose and glass cleaner
- Suitable lighting and a timer
- Plastic gloves are sometimes useful for handling the soil and plants.
Technology?
Nobody usually likes visible technology in the aquarium, but without technology it is (almost) impossible.
The technology can be covered with roots or stone structures. However, make sure that the flow through the filter is not blocked.
In a well-planted aquarium, the green filters or pipes disappear.
If you have a black filter, you can also attach a black film to the back (outside) of the aquarium so that the filter is no longer noticeable.
The internal aquarium filter is compact and is placed inside the aquarium. It draws in water through a pump mechanism and passes it through various filter media to remove dirt, excess food and harmful water components. Internal filters are easy to install and ideal for smaller aquariums or those with little space around the tank.
An external aquarium filter, on the other hand, is positioned outside the aquarium and works by using hoses to transport the water from the tank into the filter and back. These filters often offer greater filter capacity and more efficient cleaning, as they can accommodate a wider range of filter media. External filters are particularly suitable for larger aquariums and offer the advantage that they do not take up any space in the aquarium and do not impair the view in the aquarium.
Both filter types have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between internal and external filters depends on various factors, such as the size of the aquarium, the specific needs of the fish and the space available.
The interval between filter cleaning depends heavily on the type of filter, the filter volume and also the number of fish kept in the aquarium.
It is certainly important that filter cleaning and water changes are not carried out at the same time, otherwise the balance in the aquarium will be disturbed too much.
Replace the filter floss. The other filter media do not have to be replaced every time, but can also be washed out (read on the filter medium how long the respective medium can be used).
Wash the filter medium in a kettle of aquarium water and not under the tap. This preserves some of the bacteria.
Never wash all the filter media at once - it is advisable to draw up a cleaning schedule.
When cleaning, also remove the rotor and clean the motor.
Automatic feeders take over the feeding of ornamental fish while you are away. This means you can go on holiday with peace of mind and the fish are well looked after.
Start up the automatic feeder two weeks before you go on holiday. This allows you to monitor the amount of food and if too much food is fed into the aquarium, you can change the water.
It makes sense to install an automatic feeder during your holiday, even if your neighbour is feeding. Otherwise, there is usually more than enough food and the balance in the aquarium is upset.
Automatic feeders are available from JBL, EHEIM, Sera, Aquael and Superfish. Depending on the requirements, different types of food can also be added.
Lighting?
Today, all aquariums are lit with LEDs. LED technology has developed greatly recently and the light spectrum can be excellently adapted to daylight depending on the area. LEDs also consume less electricity than the old neon tubes. There is also no need to change the tubes because, unlike fluorescent tubes, LEDs do not suffer any loss of light. Neon tubes are only used in old aquariums and are no longer produced or sold.
LED lighting is expected to burn for 50,000 hours, which is around 11.5 years with 12 hours of daily lighting. However, the manufacturer's warranty is limited to 2 years — unless otherwise stated. JBL offers a four-year guarantee on all technical devices when the product is registered.
The day-night rhythm is an article anchored in the Animal Protection Ordinance and must be guaranteed.
Daylight is primarily insufficient for plant growth and direct sunlight causes stubborn green algae to form on the front pane, plants, and decorations.
We recommend an average lighting time of 9 to 12 hours. Dimming the light in the middle of the time helps to regulate algae growth. With various control units, fascinating effects can now be created with LED light. Sunrise, clouds, thunderstorms, and sunset can be simulated. Sera even has a control unit in which the phases of the moon can be set.
Cleaning & Care?
The best way to do this is with a sludge cleaner. A sludge cleaner is a suction cup with a hose that is used in aquariums to clean the substrate and suck up deposits, food residues and organic waste. It helps to keep the substrate clean and improve the water quality.
And this is how cleaning with the sludge vacuum cleaner works:
Preparation: make sure the sludge cleaner is clean and ready to use. Check all components to ensure that they are correctly assembled.
Set-up: Immerse the sludge vacuum cleaner in the aquarium water to fill it with water. Hold the hose vertically upwards and ensure that no air bubbles remain in the hose.
Suction: Hold the muck vacuum cleaner with the suction opening above the area of the substrate that you want to clean. You can now suck in at the end of the hose or use a suction aid. As soon as the water flows freely through the hose, you can direct the hose into a bucket or other suitable container to drain off the extracted water. Or you can use a long hose so that you don't have to keep emptying the boiler.
With the IN-Out from JBL you can also attach the hose directly to the tap.
Cleaning the substrate: Move the mulm vacuum slowly over the substrate, taking care not to suck up too much gravel or substrate. The mulm vacuum will suck up debris, food residue and organic material while the dirty water flows into the bucket.
Monitor the water level: Be sure to monitor the water level in the aquarium during the cleaning process to ensure that not too much water is removed. If necessary, you can add fresh water to correct the water level.
The use of a mulm vacuum should be done regularly as part of aquarium maintenance to prevent a build-up of mulm and organic debris.
The frequency depends on various factors such as the size of the aquarium, the number of fish and the amount of leftover food. By using a sludge vacuum cleaner, you help to improve the water quality in your aquarium and create a healthy living environment for your fish.
The frequency with which an aquarium needs to be cleaned depends on various factors, including the size of the aquarium, the number of fish, the type of filtration and feeding habits. In general, a regular cleaning schedule should be followed to maintain water quality and ensure the health of the fish.
Cleaning the substrate: The substrate should be vacuumed regularly to remove excess food, fish droppings and dirt. This can be done at every water change or as required.
Filter maintenance: The filter should be cleaned regularly to remove deposits and dirt. Depending on the filter type, this can be done every 2–4 weeks. Caution: Do not clean the filter and change the water at the same time.
Algae control: Algae can form in the aquarium and should be removed regularly, either by cleaning the surfaces or by using algae magnets or sponges. It is important to assess the cleaning requirements individually and adjust as necessary.
Good observation of the fish and regular testing of the aquarium water will help to determine whether adjustments need to be made to the cleaning schedule. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
Dekoration?
You can use the following roots as decoration in the aquarium:
Bog pine wood, bog oak, mangrove roots, dead alder and willow roots as well as wood that has been lying in clean running water for many years.
Roots are mandatory when keeping catfish, which grind off wood in the wild.
- Stones must be free of inclusions; otherwise, toxic substances may dissolve in the aquarium.
- Stones containing lime are not suitable for every type of aquarium (changes the hardness of the aquarium water).
- Wood must be well dried; otherwise rot may form, depending on the type of wood.
- Decorations made of synthetic resin can lose their colour over time.
Aquarium substrat?
A substrate is not usually used in quarantine aquariums as it is easier to clean. However, the mule and dirt must be vacuumed out daily.
In normal aquariums, the substrate fulfils both aesthetic and other functions. The substrate provides the necessary habitat for bacteria that break down harmful substances.
For plants, the substrate provides the support and, with the nutrient soil, also the food for growth. The height must be between 5 and 7 cm.
For bottom-dwelling fish, but also other species that like to burrow in the substrate or need the gravel for a breeding trough, this is also required by law. Animals must be able to satisfy their basic needs.
The substrate must be adapted to the fish species.
100cm x 50cm x7cm = 35'000 : 1000 = 35 litres
Depending on the product, the quantity is written in litres or kilograms. In the case of kilograms, you must calculate the quantity x 1.5 (as gravel is heavier than water) - so in our example this would be 52.5 kg.
If you buy a culture medium, you can subtract this amount. Always buy enough substrate, as it is difficult to set up if you have too little at home. We also take back whole bags.
A common gravel grain size is between 2 and 6 mm, which covers most aquarium biotopes. Gravel coarser than 12 mm is rarely used.
In nature, however, gravel is not always the same size, so a mixture can also be used. This looks more natural than if the gravel always has the same diameter.
When buying aquarium gravel, make sure that it is not sharp-edged. Corydoras and other fish with barbels like to dig in the substrate and can otherwise injure themselves.
You can also create a corner with aquarium sand. Sand in large layers is pressed tightly together and can lead to oxygen-free zones and the roots die off. This can lead to putrefaction centres with the formation of H2S, which can be fatal for the fish when released.
Aquarium plants?
Invitro aquarium plants are laboratory-grown plants that are cultivated in a nutrient medium such as gel or liquid. They are free from pests such as snails, free from algae and pesticides and offer a practical way of introducing healthy plants into the aquarium.
In vitro aquarium plants, which also means in glass, can live for up to 6 weeks in this container.
Almost all aquarium plants are now available to buy in this form, such as Anubias, Cryptocorynes, Ceratopteris, Hemianthus, Hydrocotyle, Pogostemon and many other genera and species.
The submerged habit eliminates the conversion phase from emersed to submerged in the aquarium and the plants grow better and healthier.
The number of plants needed in an aquarium depends on several factors, including the size of the aquarium, the types of plants, the type of fish and the desired aesthetics. Plants have an important role to play in the aquarium by producing oxygen, breaking down pollutants, providing shelter for fish and contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem.
A rule of thumb is that a well-planted aquarium should have about 50-70% of its bottom area covered with plants. This not only creates an attractive environment, but also provides hiding places and habitat for fish.
When buying a new aquarium, we therefore recommend buying one pot plants for every 10 litres of aquarium water. This means that you require six pots for 60 litres or 20 pots of aquarium plants for 200 litres.
Fish-food?
Live and frozen fish food: Live and frozen foods such as Artemia, mosquito larvae and krill are often an excellent addition to your fish's diet as they provide natural nutrition and can encourage hunting instincts.
Fish food is available in various forms, such as flakes, granules, or tablets.
These different forms offer various options for feeding different types and sizes of fish.
Flakes are good for smaller fish and can be easily distributed in the water.
Granules are often more versatile and can be adapted to different fish species depending on the size of the pellets.
Tablets are compact and are particularly suitable for bottom-feeding fish such as catfish or loaches.
It is important to adapt the food to the needs of the fish and to ensure a balanced diet. JBL Pro Novo offers a wide range of foods for many fish species, such as neon, killifish, Malawian perch, Corydoras etc.
- Feed the fish according to their species - not every fish needs the same food. That is why JBL, for example, also offers food that is suitable for the fish species.
- Choose the feeding method according to the feeding habits of the fish.
- Bottom fish or surface fish do not eat the same food.
- Offer a varied diet of flakes, granules and live food.
- Feed in small portions that can be eaten in a few minutes to avoid overfeeding.
- Feed once or twice a day, depending on the fish's requirements.
- Twilight and nocturnal fish are fed in the evening. Observe the fish during feeding to ensure they are all eating.
- Use high quality food to maintain the health of the fish.
Breeding?
Mouthbrooders are fish or amphibians that take the fertilised eggs or hatched young into their mouths to protect them from predators.
There are two types of mouthbrooders: ovophilic and larvophilic. In ovophilic mouthbrooders, the "egg-loving" fish, the caring parent takes the eggs into its mouth during courtship. In contrast, larvophilic fish, the "larva-loving" fish, only take the hatched larvae into their mouths for brood care.
A distinction is also made as to which parent animal is responsible for caring for the fry. In the maternal care system it is the female, whereas in the paternal care system it is the male. If both parents are involved in brood care, this is referred to as biparental brood care.
Yes, once the guppies have been fertilised, they can store the sperm and use it for subsequent litters. This means that females that have been kept in an aquarium with males can still birth to young without males.
The mating organ of the males of most live bearing toothcarps is called the gonopodium. At the onset of sexual maturity, the male's anal fin transforms into the gonopodium. The anal fin of females resembles a triangle.
