A CO₂ system for an aquarium is an aquarium technology that releases carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the aquarium water to promote the growth of aquatic plants. These systems are used to create optimal conditions for plant growth, especially in well-planted Holland aquariums or aqua scape.
A CO2 system consists of the cylinder in which the gas is stored, the pressure reducer and the hose that feeds the gas into the aquarium. The amount of gas can be controlled with the bubble counter. The diffuser is then used to distribute the CO2 in the water. A CO2 system can be controlled manually or automatically, depending on the needs of the aquarist and the complexity of the system.
The addition of CO2 promotes plant growth, improves the colourfulness of the plants and creates a healthy and lively underwater environment overall. However, it is important to monitor and adjust the CO2 supply accordingly to avoid overdosing, which could harm fish and other organisms in the aquarium.
