A substrate is not usually used in quarantine aquariums as it is easier to clean. However, the mule and dirt must be vacuumed out daily.

In normal aquariums, the substrate fulfils both aesthetic and other functions. The substrate provides the necessary habitat for bacteria that break down harmful substances.

For plants, the substrate provides the support and, with the nutrient soil, also the food for growth. The height must be between 5 and 7 cm.

For bottom-dwelling fish, but also other species that like to burrow in the substrate or need the gravel for a breeding trough, this is also required by law. Animals must be able to satisfy their basic needs. The substrate must be adapted to the fish species.
