Its distinctive ornamental feature is the light green, oval leaves with a prominent pale central vein. Although this plant has been scientifically recognised for a long time, it was only "discovered" for aquariums a few years ago. With its very decorative, strongly wavy leaf edges, it is probably one of the most beautiful foreground plants. At first glance, you think of a rosette plant, but it is actually a strongly compressed stem plant. If a few basic cultivation conditions are met, Pogostemon helferi forms beautiful plant cushions: good to intensive lighting, temperatures around 25 °C, medium-hard water. Under these conditions, its leaf colour is rich green. Pogostemon helferi can be planted in gravel as well as attached to stones or roots.

The dwarf spear leaf, as it is known commercially, is one of the most popular aquarium plants of all. It is an excellent foreground plant that requires very little care. When planting, attention must be paid to the rhizome. This thickened shoot must not be covered with substrate. The small Anubias grows best when tied up on stones and roots (see Mbuna trees on page 78). The dwarf spear leaves are very often used for cichlids from Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika. Here they look particularly decorative between the stone structures.

This growth form is probably the result of a mutation and is rather atypical for the Hygrophila genus due to its height. The stems are strongly compressed and the leaves sit close together in a compact form. Plants cultivated above water have deep dark green leaves, in the aquarium they are bright light green. It grows slowly, which is why it requires significantly less care than other Hygrophila species. It is well suited to the foreground. Its leaf shape makes it a nice change from other foreground plants.

An attractive novelty from Brazil is the bear’s claw family plant Staurogyne repens. Its appearance is somewhat reminiscent of a “miniature Hygrophila”, but it is an excellent plant for the foreground. It grows very slowly, in good conditions even creeping over the substrate. Staurogyne needs intense light and a good supply of nutrients above the substrate. If the shoot tips are pruned regularly, the plant develops many new side shoots, resulting in a very beautiful, dense plant population. In “aquascaping”, this beauty can be excellently combined with Hemianthus callitrichoides.
