Invitro aquarium plants are laboratory-grown plants that are cultivated in a nutrient medium such as gel or liquid. They are free from pests such as snails, free from algae and pesticides and offer a practical way of introducing healthy plants into the aquarium.
In vitro aquarium plants, which also means in glass, can live for up to 6 weeks in this container.
Almost all aquarium plants are now available to buy in this form, such as Anubias, Cryptocorynes, Ceratopteris, Hemianthus, Hydrocotyle, Pogostemon and many other genera and species.
The submerged habit eliminates the conversion phase from emersed to submerged in the aquarium and the plants grow better and healthier.
The number of plants needed in an aquarium depends on several factors, including the size of the aquarium, the types of plants, the type of fish and the desired aesthetics. Plants have an important role to play in the aquarium by producing oxygen, breaking down pollutants, providing shelter for fish and contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem.
A rule of thumb is that a well-planted aquarium should have about 50-70% of its bottom area covered with plants. This not only creates an attractive environment, but also provides hiding places and habitat for fish.
When buying a new aquarium, we therefore recommend buying one pot plants for every 10 litres of aquarium water. This means that you require six pots for 60 litres or 20 pots of aquarium plants for 200 litres.

What are aquatic plants & aquarium plants?
Aquatic plants (also known as aquarium plants) are especially suited to life under water. They grow completely or partially in water and adapt ideally to the conditions in the aquarium. In addition to their decorative effect, they also fulfil important biological functions such as filtering pollutants and producing oxygen.
Country of origin aquarium plants
Origin Asia: Many popular species such as Cryptocoryne or Bucephalandra originate from the tropical waters of Asia.
Origin Africa: Robust species such as Anubias are native to Africa - perfect for shady spots in the aquarium.
Origin North America: Some stem plants and rare mosses come from clear, cool waters in North America.
Origin South and Central America: Classic aquarium plants such as Echinodorus and fine-stemmed plants are common here - ideal for South American-style tanks.
Planting zones in the aquarium
Foreground plants: Small-growing species such as ground cover plants or mini ferns - perfect for the front of the tank.
Mid-ground plants: Medium-height plants that create transitions and organise structures.
Background plants: Fast-growing, tall plants, ideal for greening the back wall and for dense vegetation.
Special plant species & formats
Plants on decor: Plants tied up on roots or stones - can be placed directly without planting.
Mother plants: Large, strong plants in pots with a well-developed root system - ideal for beginners and stable layouts.
In vitro plants: sterile plants grown in gel culture - free from algae, snails and pesticides.
Stem plants: Versatile, often fast-growing - ideal for aquascaping or as nutrient consumers.
Floating plants: Floating freely on the water surface - provide shade, reduce algae growth and offer protection for young fish.
Popular aquarium plants at a glance
Anubias: Easy to care for, robust, grows slowly - ideal on roots or stones.
Cryptocoryne: Diverse in shape and colour, ideal for the middle ground and quiet corners.
Echinodorus: Impressive and large-leaved - ideal as an eye-catcher in the background.
Ferns (e.g. Java fern): Undemanding and decorative, likes to be tied up.
Mosses (e.g. Java moss): Versatile, excellent for shrimp tanks and fine details in aquascaping.
