Of all the mussels available in northern to central European regions, only the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) is likely to be of aquaristic interest.
They line the coasts of the cooler seas and sheltered fjords - they should be familiar to anyone who has ever visited the North Sea coast.
With the help of their so-called byssus threads, which are produced in a special gland, the blue mussel attaches itself to all reasonably stable surfaces such as stones, ropes, groynes, quay walls or even to conspecifics.
It does this primarily in the intertidal zone, which is rich in suspended matter and where extensive mussel beds can be found.
Mussels are filter feeders, i.e. they pump seawater through their open shells into their gills using flagellar movements. These have a net-like structure to filter out utilisable microorganisms and phytoplankton. An adult mussel is able to pump up to 70 litres of water per day.
Mytilus edulis is rich in iron, vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty acids.
Food tip:
For feeding small to medium-sized fish, mussel meat should be cut into mouth-sized pieces and fed directly.
For larger fish, the mussels can be halved so that they can also enjoy the algae-rich stomach contents of the mussels.
