The largest proportion are crustaceans of various sizes. Krill is a Norwegian word meaning whale food. In a narrower sense, krill refers to euphausids, which are small crustaceans that are part of the plankton (zooplankton) and belong to the shrimp-like crustaceans of the order Euphausiacea. The best known species is the Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), as well as Euphausia pacifica. Krill form huge swarms. The biomass is estimated at 100 - 800 million tonnes, making E. superba probably the most successful animal species in the world (world fishery yield approx. 100 million tonnes per year for comparison).
