Its undemanding nature makes it the perfect plant for beginners. The plants grow best with their rhizomes tied up on stones and roots. Moderate to normal lighting is sufficient, although the plant also grows well in stronger light. Daughter plants are often formed on older leaves, which can be tied up again elsewhere with a thin fishing line.

In the aquarium, the plant forms a compact rosette with a rust-red to deep dark red colour. Older plants reach a height of up to 25 cm. As with many Echinodorus varieties, emersed and submerged leaves differ enormously. The 'Little Bear' is bright green in the greenhouse and produces its first red submerged leaves after just a few days in the aquarium. Always a fascinating spectacle!

The popular variety Echinodorus 'Ozelot' has been on the market for some time. Its striking pattern of spots is striking, reminiscent of the fur of the ocelot cat. The plant is very vigorous with narrow elliptical leaves. New leaves show an intense brown-red to dark red color. Over time, they turn dark olive green with the typical spotted pattern. The growth height of this attractive variety is only 20-30 cm. It is therefore also suitable for use in medium-sized aquaria.

Notes
Easy to care for and undemanding.
The 'Sunset' variety is a beautiful cultivated form for the medium to background. Cultivated in the open air, its leaves are very striking with a white-yellowish veining; under water, the plant displays its full range of colors from light pink to deep pink. Like the normal H. polysperma, this variety is also easy to care for and undemanding. Most other colored stem plants are somewhat more difficult. A good dose of iron fertilizer also promotes the color intensity of the shoot tips. At 4 cm, the leaves of Hygrophila polysperma are smaller than those of the stem form and are therefore also suitable for nano cubes.

somewhat more demanding
This green water trumpet originates from the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Due to its low growth height of only 5 - 10 cm, it is the smallest species kept in aquaria. On the banks of fast-flowing rivers it grows in dense colonies. Cryptocoryne parva grows very slowly and is also somewhat more demanding to care for. Stronger lighting and CO2 supplements are required. The small water trumpet is highly recommended for Nano Cubes. Even in the smallest 10 L cube, this little plant has enough space.
