The plant produces elongated, slightly wavy leaves which, depending on light and nutrient levels, can range in colour from greenish to coppery to a rich reddish hue. This allows it to add beautiful splashes of colour to the aquarium and makes it ideal as an eye-catching feature in the midground or background.Under good conditions, Ammania gracilis grows upright and can reach a height of around 20 to 50 cm. To develop an intense red colour, the plant requires medium to strong lighting, a good supply of nutrients and, ideally, CO₂ supplementation.
