The steppe cricket is one of the most commonly fed feeder insects. Their calm nature and impressive size make them a preferred meal for almost every insect-eating reptile and also for many soft-feeding birds. Steppe crickets originate from the subtropical climate zones of South America. Females can reach a total length of up to 35 mm, while the males are slightly smaller. The chocolate-brown colouring of the adult animals makes them clearly distinguishable from Mediterranean crickets, which are deep black. Steppe crickets are particularly noticeable to terrarium keepers due to the males' relatively quiet calling and low jumping ability.In contrast to the Mediterranean cricket, the steppe cricket is not as productive. Raising these animals also takes a little longer than with Mediterranean crickets.The animals can be shipped all year round. In summer, care must be taken to ensure that the animals are not exposed to excessive heat, as crickets generate considerable intrinsic heat when particularly active. If this is not sufficiently dissipated, it can cause damage. On the other hand, this is an advantage in winter, as the intrinsic heat in combination with winter packaging enables them to withstand lower temperatures during shipping.Since the crickets are offered in different sizes, they are not just suitable for large lizards. In fact, many owners of medium-sized lizards such as leopard geckos, collared iguanas, juvenile bearded dragons, etc., have recognised a significant benefit in steppe crickets. Medium-sized animals of this species are similar in size to, for example, adult house crickets or short-winged crickets. However, as they are not yet adult, they do not have wings. This means the often bothersome chirping of the males is eliminated.

The pebble design of the Exo Terra Waterfall brings the natural look of a small, falling stream of water into your living room. These small waterfalls and streams are often used by reptiles and amphibians to drink water and are therefore an important feature in any tropical environment. The waterfall stimulates the natural drinking behaviour of lizards (such as: chameleons, anoles, water dragons, etc…)Maintenance is easy, as the waterfall can be dismantled into separate parts. An Exo Terra Repti Flo pump is included to ensure water circulation. As a safety measure, smaller stones or pebbles can be added to the collection tank for smaller chameleons and frogs. Organic waste should be removed from the collection tank at regular intervals so that the water remains clean. Tap water should be treated with Aquatize to eliminate chlorine and heavy metals. Adding Biotize will help keep the water clean for longer, stimulate the settlement of necessary beneficial bacteria and reduce odours caused by decomposing waste.
