In the rift valley lakes of East Africa (Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika) many cichlids have specialized in grazing the algae growth with the microorganisms living in it from the rocks (herbivorous growth eaters). JBL PRONOVO MALAWI was developed for these species.

In contrast, almost all other species in both lakes are predators and eat fish, microorganisms, shrimps and fry. Some even eat only the scales of other fish (Plecodus). The JBL PRONOVO TANGANYIKA was developed for the predatory species of both lakes. If both groups are kept together in ONE aquarium, it is essential to offer both types of food. This ensures that each type of food gets the right food for it.

In the case of our fish, there is another important aspect: Better digestion means that less is excreted and so the water is less polluted, resulting in fewer algae problems and cleaner water.

As the majority of the cichlids kept in Lake Tanganyika are predators, the food for predatory species has been named PRONOVO TANGANYIKA. As most of the cultivated species from Lake Malawi are growth eaters, JBL has named this food PRONOVO MALAWI.

Only a male of the same species is fought to the death - hence the name! The beautiful, long-finned fighting fish in our pet shops are descended from the species Betta splendens, which is also popular for fish fights in Asia. Fighting fish and many other labyrinth fish (gouramis, gourami & macropods) live in both standing and flowing water. They are ambush hunters, quickly darting out with their overhead mouth to eat, for example, an insect that had landed on the water surface. They do not eat any aquarium plants and do not need much space. If you want to keep females as well as a male, you should definitely add several females. A single female would be too crowded.
