With Primula japonica ‘Alba’ you are choosing a charming spring bloomer for your garden pond that enhances damp marginal areas. Especially around ponds, the start of the season is crucial: While many waterside plants are still developing in spring, this primrose offers colour from March to May (III–V). This means the pond edge appears well-kept and lively early on – ideal if you want your garden pond to stand out from the very start of the season.
The plant remains pleasantly compact at around 20 to 30 cm tall. This makes it ideal for the front of shoreline planting, for damp marginal beds or as a colourful accent between stones and stepping plates. ‘Alba’ looks particularly harmonious if you plant several together in small groups: This creates a calm, natural effect and emphasises the shoreline without visually closing off the water surface.
The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm gives you flexibility in placement. In practice, the Japanese primrose is ideal in moist bank soil or in very shallow marginal zones where the soil remains evenly fresh. The 9-cm pot is perfect if you want to plant several at once for a quick visible effect. If water levels fluctuate, a small planting basket can be useful to keep the plant stable and the location clean.
Thanks to zone 1, Primula japonica ‘Alba’ is hardy and therefore well suited for perennial pond edge planting. A fitting choice if you want the pond edge to look attractive not only in summer, but already in spring.
Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the utmost care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by postal delivery or other unforeseen events. This includes both brown leaves and broken stems. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.
Zoo-Roco tip: Plant ‘Alba’ where you walk past frequently in spring – it is ideal for bringing the pond edge to life early. If your marginal area becomes drier at times in summer, place the primrose a little more sheltered in moist soil (instead of deeper in the water), so it remains evenly supplied.
