Primula rosea – Pink primrose for pond edges

Primula rosea is a true spring bloomer for moist areas by the garden pond, providing fresh colour accents with pink flowers from March to May (III–V). With a height of 20–30 cm, it remains compact and is ideal for the bank and edge zone. The planting depth is 0 to –15 cm, and it is hardy in zone 1.–2.

  • Flower colour: pink
  • Flowering time: III–V (March to May)
  • Height: approx. 20–30 cm
  • Pot size: approx. 9cm

Plant specifications:

  • They add vibrant colour to the pond edge very early in the year when many other plants are still reluctant.
  • Thanks to their compact height, the water surface remains visible while the edge zone bursts into friendly bloom.
  • With a planting depth of 0 to –15 cm, Primula rosea can be placed flexibly in moist bank areas.

Technical data:

  • Botanical name: Primula rosea
  • German name: Pink primrose
  • Height (cm): 20 / 30 cm
  • Planting depth: 0 / –15 cm
  • Flowering time: III–V
  • Winter hardiness zone: Zone 1
  • Pot size: 9 cm

With Primula rosea you will get a reliable harbinger of spring by the garden pond. Especially around ponds, the first colour accents of the year have a particularly strong effect: When the water surface is still calm and many bank plants are only just sprouting, Primula rosea already provides radiant accents from March to May (III–V). This makes it ideal for visually opening the pond season early and making the edge zone appear lively.
The plant remains pleasantly low at approx. 20 to 30 cm. This makes it perfect for the foreground at the pond edge, between stones or along paths and stepping stones. It does not obstruct the view of the water but subtly and neatly emphasises the shoreline. Primula rosea looks especially harmonious when you plant several plants in small groups: This creates a tranquil area that looks as if it has grown naturally and smoothly shapes the transition from water to garden.
The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes Primula rosea flexible for moist areas. In practice, it is particularly suitable for damp bank soil or for very shallow edge zones where the soil remains consistently fresh. The 9-cm pot is ideal if you want to use several plants to achieve a visible effect more quickly. If you want to control the position exactly, a small planting basket can be helpful – especially if the water level fluctuates.
Thanks to zone 1, Primula rosea is hardy and a good fit for perennial pond edge designs. It is a harmonious addition if you are keen to create a beautiful start to the season and want the pond edge to be attractive not only in summer, but already in spring.

Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive in good health and undamaged. Despite the utmost care, it may happen that plants are slightly damaged by the postal service or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken twigs. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.

Zoo-Roco tip: Plant Primula rosea where you often pass by in spring - it is perfect for “waking up” the pond. If the location becomes drier in summer, combine it at the edge with low-growing groundcover to keep the soil moist for longer.

Veronica beccabunga - Brook's tongue for pond edges & banksVeronica beccabunga (brooklime) is a low-growing pond edge plant for damp banks and the shallow water zone. It is suitable for a planting depth of 0 to -15 cm and remains pleasantly compact at a height of 10-20 cm. It flowers from May to September (V-IX).Flowering time: V-IX (May to September)Winter hardiness/zone: Zone 1-2Height: approx. 10-20 cmPot size: approx. 9cmPlant specifications:They give the edge of the pond and stream a soft and natural look without obscuring the view of the water. Thanks to the long flowering period V-IX, the border remains alive for many weeks. With a zone 1-2 rating, the brook lily is suitable for perennial, low-maintenance pond planting.Technical data:Botanical name: Veronica beccabungaGerman name: BrooklimeFlowering time: V-IXWinter hardiness: Zone 1 / 2Height: approx. 10-20 cmPlanting depth: 0 to -15 cmVeronica beccabunga (brooklime) is a compact, natural-looking plant for garden ponds, streams and damp banks. The edges of ponds in particular often have transitions that quickly appear "hard" - such as stones, film edges or between plant baskets. Bachbunge helps to visually connect these areas: It grows low, looks calm and provides a natural finish without overloading the edge of the pond.A major advantage is the long flowering period from May to September (V-IX). This means that the border remains attractive and neat for much of the season. Due to its low growth height of approx. 10 to 20 cm, Veronica beccabunga fits particularly well in the foreground of the bank planting or as a "filler plant" in the shallow water zone. It can be combined excellently with taller structural plants, which can be placed behind it, while the brook brome in the foreground visually softens the edge. The recommended planting depth of 0 to -15 cm makes the plant very flexible: place it directly in moist bank soil or in a very shallow water area, depending on the pond structure. A plant basket is often helpful for a neat pond edge and easy maintenance, especially if you want to move the plant later. An evenly moist location is particularly important for growth. Thanks to zone 1-2, Veronica beccabunga is suitable for perennial pond installations and is a good choice if you are looking for a low, uncomplicated plant for damp areas that blends harmoniously into a naturalistic pond design.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: Place the brook lily along the shoreline where you want to close gaps - it looks particularly natural when it "grows in" between stones. In very shallow areas (down to -15 cm), a plant basket is practical so that the plant is stable and you can keep the design neatly under control.

Eriophorum angustifolium - Cottongrass for pond edgesEriophorum angustifolium (cotton grass) brings a light, natural effect to the garden pond with its white flowers from April to June (IV-VI). At a height of 30-40 cm, it is ideal for bank and shallow water zones. The recommended planting depth is 0 to -15 cm and the plant is hardy in zones 1-2.Flower colour: whiteFlowering time: IV-VI (April to June)Height: approx. 30-40 cmPot size: approx. 9 cmPlant specifications: They create a particularly natural-looking pond edge and bring an airy, "meadow-like" structure to the bank zone. The flowering period IV-VI provides bright accents in spring, which look particularly good by the water. Thanks to zone 1-2, cotton grass is suitable for perennial, low-maintenance pond planting.Technical data:Botanical name: Eriophorum angustifoliumGerman name: Cotton grassHeight (cm): 30 / 40 cmPlanting depth: 0 / -15 cmWinter hardiness: Zone 1 / 2Pot size: 9 cmEriophorum angustifolium (cottongrass) is a plant that creates a particularly natural, light effect in the garden pond. Cottongrass is an excellent choice for ponds that are designed to be close to nature or deliberately have a soft shoreline. Its grass-like growth brings structure to the edge zone without appearing heavy or dominant - ideal if you want to keep the water surface visually open. The white flowers appear from April to June (IV-VI) and create bright accents early in the year. This flower is particularly attractive by the water because it reflects beautifully on a calm surface and "brightens up" the shoreline. With a height of approx. 30 to 40 cm , cotton grass is perfect for the foreground to middle ground: it combines well with lower ground cover plants and also looks harmonious next to taller shore plants that can be placed in the background. The recommended planting depth of 0 to -15 cm makes Eriophorum angustifolium ideal for the shore and shallow water edge zone. Place the plant in moist bank soil or in a very shallow water area.If you prefer a clear pond edge or want to keep the position flexible later on, a plant basket is a practical solution - this keeps the plant exactly where it looks best. Thanks to its hardiness zone 1-2 , cotton grass is suitable for many regions and is an uncomplicated choice for perennial pond edge planting. It looks particularly attractive if you plant several plants slightly staggered - this creates a natural bank effect that harmonises the look of the pond.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo Roco tip: Cottongrass looks best when placed in small groups in the edge zone (0 to -15 cm) and combined with quieter green plants. If your water level fluctuates, place the pot a little higher at first and lower it gradually as it grows - the plant will usually take off more reliably this way.

The variegated calamus is ideal for visually calming the transition between the water surface and the garden: It looks natural, but remains compact and controllable. This plant is a particularly harmonious choice in places where you want clean lines - for example along pond edges, in shallow bays or in small shoreline areas. The ideal place is in the shore to shallow water zone. The specified planting depth of 0 to -15 cm allows for flexible use: directly on the moist edge or standing slightly in the water. Thanks to its height of approx. 20 to 30 cm, the calamus remains pleasantly low so that it does not obstruct the view of the water surface. At the same time, it provides structure between higher-growing bank plants and lower ground cover plants. The variegated calamus is particularly valuable in pond design because it combines well with many other pond and marsh plants. It is suitable for both naturalistic planting schemes and more modern pond designs that emphasise clear shapes and calm areas. Thanks to its hardiness zone 1-2, it is also suitable for perennial pond edge planting. The plant is supplied in a pot (approx. 10 cm). For easy handling around the pond, we recommend using it in a plant basket - depending on the structure - so that the location remains stable and you can easily move the plant if necessary.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events (e.g. brown leaves or broken shoots). We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: Place the variegated calamus in the most beautiful spot where you walk past it every day: It looks particularly elegant when planted in small groups and its fine leaves are reflected in the water. For more control, we recommend using a planting basket - this will keep the edges neat and you can easily divide or reposition the plant later.

At 30-40 cm tall, it remains compact and is ideal for the foreground along the shoreline. It flowers from June to August (VI-VIII), is suitable for planting at a depth of 0 to -15 cm and is hardy in zones 1-2.Flowering time: VI-VIII (June to August)Height: approx. 30-40 cmPlanting depth: 0 to -15 cmPot size: approx. 9cmPlant specifications:They naturally green the edge of the pond and create a soft transition between the water and the garden. The flowering period VI-VIII brings a lively accent to the shore zone in the main season. Thanks to the planting depth of 0 to -15 cm, the plant can be placed flexibly at the moist edge or in very shallow water.Technical data:Botanical name: Geranium palustre (often also listed as Geranium palustris)German name: Marsh cranesbillHeight (cm): 30 / 40 cmPlanting depth: 0 / -15 cmFlowering time: VI-VIIIWinter hardiness: Zone 1 / 2Pot size: 9 cmWith Geranium palustre (Marsh Cranes-bill), you are choosing a perennial that is particularly suitable for damp areas around the garden pond. At the edge of the pond, there are often areas that remain evenly fresh to moist - this is exactly where the marsh cranesbill creates a natural, calm effect. It closes gaps, visually connects different planting areas and softens the transition between water and garden. With a height of approx. 30 to 40 cm, the plant remains pleasantly compact. This makes it ideal for the foreground of bankside planting, along stones, edges or stepping stones. Geranium palustre looks particularly harmonious in small groups: this creates a flat, "grown" look that does not overload the edge of the pond and keeps the water surface in view. The flowering period from June to August (VI-VIII) falls in the peak season - perfect for giving the edge zone a lively and well-tended appearance in summer. The recommended planting depth of 0 to -15 cm allows for flexible placement. Depending on the pond structure, plant the marsh cranesbill directly in moist bank soil or place it in the very shallow edge area. The 9 cm pot is particularly suitable if you want to plant several plants to quickly achieve an even border effect. A planting basket can be helpful for a controllable, clean pond edge - this keeps the plant where it works best and allows it to be moved easily if necessary. Thanks to zone 1-2, Geranium palustre is hardy and therefore a good choice for perennial pond plants. If you are looking for an easy-care, compact perennial for the edge of a pond that combines well and provides additional vibrancy in summer, this marsh cranesbill is a suitable addition. Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: Plant Geranium palustre at the edge of the pond as a "connecting plant" between taller waterside perennials and low ground cover plants. At a depth of 0 to -15 cm (or in moist bank soil), it grows in particularly harmoniously - and in small groups, the edge immediately looks more natural.

The leaves are arranged like umbrellas and visually resemble small palm fronds – this creates a clear yet natural shape that immediately upgrades pond edges. Especially when many softly growing plants are around the pond, this sedge provides a calm counterpoint and brings order to the overall picture. With a height of approx. 60 to 80 cm, Carex muskingumensis is ideal for the middle to the background of bankside planting. It can visually “frame” pond edges without completely covering the water. It is particularly harmonious in small groups or as a recurring element along the bank – this creates a natural rhythm that makes the pond appear cast from a single mould. The flowering period from June to August (VI–VIII) complements the season; however, the focus with this plant is usually on the attractive leaf structure. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes the palm frond sedge suitable for the bankside and shallow water zone. Plant it in moist bankside soil or place it in a very shallow water area – depending on how your pond is constructed. Thanks to zone 1–2, Carex muskingumensis is suitable for perennial pond installations in many regions and is an easy-care choice if you want to combine structure, height and a natural appearance.Note on dispatch: We do our utmost to ensure that our plants reach you healthy and undamaged. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Place the palm frond sedge so that it “frames the pond” from your main viewing axis – for example, to the left and right of a seating area with a view of the water. At a depth of 0 to –15 cm it looks particularly natural, and in the plant basket the form remains clean and can be corrected at any time.

Dwarf water lily - Nymphaea pygmaea rubra
Dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ red (18cm)The dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ brings an elegant splash of colour to the water’s surface with its red flowers. Thanks to its compact form, it is particularly suitable for smaller garden ponds as well as mini ponds and bowls. Ideal if you want a water lily that doesn’t take up too much space.Dwarf-form water lily – suitable for small water areasFlower colour: redGrowth: compact, for a controlled leaf areaArea of application: Garden pond, mini pond, tub/bowlTechnical dataBotanical name: Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’English name: Dwarf water lilyFlower colour: redPlanting depth: -10 to -40cmFlowering period: June to September Pot size: approx. 18 cmWith the dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ you bring the typical water lily atmosphere into the garden – even if your pond is rather small or you want to plant in a mini pond or tub. Dwarf water lilies are designed to unfold a harmonious effect in a limited space: Floating leaves on the surface and an attractive blossom, without the water area being quickly completely covered. The ‘Rubra’ variety creates an elegant, easily visible splash of colour with its red flowers.Especially with smaller garden ponds, balanced planting is crucial. Water lilies that grow too vigorously can quickly dominate the surface and “close” the water effect. In comparison, a dwarf water lily remains more compact and is therefore a good choice if you want a calm, well-kept look and nevertheless do not want to do without the classic water lily eye-catcher. ‘Rubra’ is particularly effective when positioned so that you have a good view of the flowers from your seat or terrace – as the red shades clearly stand out against the water and greenery. For establishing, stable placement is important, ideally in a planting basket or a suitable container. This way the rhizome lies undisturbed, and you can adjust the position if necessary. If you are looking for a compact water lily with a strong colour, Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ is a fitting choice for a natural yet controlled pond design.Note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it may occur that plants are slightly damaged during postal delivery or by other unforeseen events. This includes both brown leaves and bent branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Put dwarf water lilies in a planting basket so you can easily adjust their position. If the plant is still small at first, start out higher (shallower) and lower them later – this often encourages quicker growth and flowering.

English water mint (9cm) - Preslia cervina 'Alba'
Valeriana officinalis – Valerian for pond edge & bank zoneValeriana officinalis (valerian) is a stately, natural-looking perennial for moist areas around the garden pond. With 60–100 cm height, it adds structure to the bank zone without appearing artificial. The flowering period is from May to August (V–VIII), it is suitable for 0 to –15 cm planting depth and hardy in zone 1–2.Flowering period: V–VIII (May to August)Height: approx. 60–100 cmPlanting depth: 0 to –15 cmPot size: approx. 9cmPlant specifications:You receive a robust waterside perennial that naturally enhances the pond edge and adds height to the planting.Due to the long flowering period V–VIII, the edge zone remains attractive and appears well-groomed for months. Thanks to planting depth 0 to –15 cm, valerian can be flexibly placed in moist border areas and very shallow zones.Technical data:Botanical name: Valeriana officinalisEnglish name: ValerianHeight (cm): 60 / 100 cmPlanting depth: 0 / –15 cmFlowering period: V–VIIIWinter hardiness zone: Zone 1 / 2Pot size: 9 cmWith Valeriana officinalis (valerian) you are choosing a waterside perennial for the garden pond that looks particularly natural and gives the edge planting noticeably more height and depth. Especially with ponds, a “shallow” impression is quickly created if only low plants are standing in the marginal area. Valerian creates a beautiful counterpoint here: it grows upright, brings volume to the bank zone and can be combined excellently with lower pond edge plants that soften the transition to the water in the foreground. The flowering period from May to August (V–VIII) ensures that the pond edge appears lively for much of the season. As there is no indication of flower colour, this point remains neutral – in the garden, however, the overall effect of height, structure and flowering period is often the focus for valerian anyway. With a growth height of approx. 60 to 100 cm, the plant is ideal for the middle to background of the bank planting or for moist border beds next to the pond. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes Valeriana officinalis flexible in use: place it in moist bank soil or in very shallow areas, depending on pond layout. Especially if the water level fluctuates, it is advisable to place the plant so that it permanently receives enough moisture without being “too deep”.The 9-cm pot is ideal if you wish to plant several plants, to achieve a natural, full covering more quickly. Thanks to zone 1–2, valerian is suitable for perennial pond installations in many regions and is a good choice if you want to design the pond edge in a natural, low-maintenance way and with noticeable structure.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it may occur that plants are slightly damaged by postal transit or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as bent branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: If you want a natural bank look, do not plant valerian individually, but in small groups (e.g. 3 pieces) slightly staggered behind lower marginal plants. This way, the pond edge appears deeper and more “grown”, and the taller stems are more stable in the overall picture.

We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: Place the coloured water grass in such a way that it "draws" the edge of the pond: place it slightly offset along the shoreline to create a natural but clear structure. It is stable at a depth of 0 to -15 cm - the edge remains particularly clean in the plant basket and you can easily move the plant if necessary.

At a depth of 0 to –15 cm it looks particularly natural, and in the plant basket the form remains clean and can be corrected at any time.

Creeping Mazus blue (18cm) - Mazus reptans
Creeping Mazus for the garden pond – Mazus reptans blueMazus reptans blue is a low-growing ground cover that quickly greens the damp edge areas around the garden pond. The white flowers appear from April to September (IV–IX) and provide a neat, fresh impression for a long time. Thanks to zone 1–2, the plant is suitable for perennial plantings.Flowering period: IV–IX (April to September)Flower colour: blueWinter hardiness: Zone 1 - 2Pot: approx. 18 cmPlant specificationsThey quickly close gaps at the edge of the pond and create a natural, soft transition between water and garden. The long flowering period IV–IX keeps the border attractive for many months. The low, creeping growth looks neat and helps to reduce open soil in damp areas.Technical data:Botanical name: Mazus reptans (blue)German name: Creeping MazusHeight: 10 - 15 cmPlanting depth: Bank zoneFlowering period: VI–IXWinter hardiness zone: Zone 1/2 With Mazus reptans blue you get a reliable ground cover for damp locations – ideal for landscaping around the garden pond. Especially at the banks, in the marsh zone or along streams, small gaps often occur where open soil remains visible. Here, creeping Mazus provides a natural finish: it grows flat, visually connects different planting areas and makes the transition from water to garden appear much softer.A particular advantage is the long flowering period from April to September (IV–IX). In this way, Mazus reptans brings bright accents to the border planting for many months and at the same time looks neat, without you having to constantly replant or touch up. The white flowers fit into virtually any pond design – whether naturalistic or more modern – and can be easily combined with taller waterside plants. This makes Mazus particularly suitable as a "carpet" in the foreground, while structure-giving pond plants complete the picture behind it.For placement at the garden pond we recommend a location that stays evenly damp. Plant the Mazus where you want a dense finish – for example at the pond edge, between stones or at the edge of stepping stones. This not only keeps the bank zone visually calmer, it also appears more stable and less "torn up". As there is no information on height, planting depth and pot size, these points remain neutral; in practice, the main thing is a damp, suitable location at the edge.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive with you healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by postal delivery or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as bent branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Plant Mazus reptans white at the pond edge where you want to break up "hard edges" – e.g. between stones or along the liner edge. If the location becomes temporarily drier in summer, a thin layer of fine gravel or mulch at the edge will help to keep the soil moist for longer.

Especially around ponds, the start of the season is crucial: While many marginal plants are still developing in spring, this primrose already brings colour from March to May (III–V). This gives the pond edge an early tidy and lively appearance – ideal if you want your garden pond to be a focal point right at the start of the season. The plant remains pleasantly compact at around 20 to 30 cm tall. This makes it ideal for the foreground of marginal plantings, for damp border beds, or as a colourful accent between stones and stepping slabs. ‘Appleblossom’ is especially harmonious when you plant several in small groups: This creates a calm, natural look and emphasises the edge without visually blocking the water surface. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm gives you flexibility in placement. In practice, the Japanese primrose is ideal in moist marginal soil or very shallow border zones where the soil stays evenly fresh. The 9-cm pot is perfect if you want to plant several specimens to quickly achieve a visible effect. With fluctuating water levels, a small planting basket can be useful so that the plant stays stable and the site remains tidy. Thanks to Zone 1, Primula japonica ‘Appleblossom’ is hardy and therefore well suited for perennial pond edge designs. An appropriate choice if you want to make the pond edge attractive not only in summer but also in spring.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, plants may be slightly damaged by the postal service or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We do not accept liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Plant ‘Appleblossom’ where you often walk past in spring – it is ideal for enlivening pond edges early in the season. If your margin area gets drier at times in summer, place the primrose a little more sheltered in moist soil (instead of deeper into the water) so that it remains evenly supplied.

For a harmonious overall look, we recommend planting in small groups or as a recurring element along the shoreline. This creates a natural, well thought-out design without the pond edge becoming unruly. The cardinal lobelia looks particularly attractive when the flowers are slightly above the waterline - the colour is reflected in the water and enhances the effect. With a recommended planting depth of 0 to -15 cm, Lobelia cardinalis is ideal for the edge and shallow water zone. Depending on the pond structure, place the plant directly in moist bank soil or in a very shallow water area. A plant basket can help to keep the position stable and make it easier to move the plant if necessary - especially if you want to adapt the design seasonally. Thanks to zone 1-2, the cardinal lobelia is suitable for many regions and is an exciting choice if you want to create a permanent pond edge but still want to work with clear colour accents.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged.
