Technical data
  • Botanical name: Acorus calamus 'Gramineus'
  • German name: Colourful calamus
  • Height: 20 / 30 cm
  • Depth: 0 / -15 cm
  • Winter hardiness zone: 1 / 2
  • Planting depth: 0 to -15 cm

Acorus calamus 'Gramineus' is a pond edge plant that is particularly characterised by its grassy, tidy growth. The variegated calamus is ideal for visually calming the transition between the water surface and the garden: It looks natural, but remains compact and controllable. This plant is a particularly harmonious choice in places where you want clean lines - for example along pond edges, in shallow bays or in small shoreline areas.
The ideal place is in the shore to shallow water zone. The specified planting depth of 0 to -15 cm allows for flexible use: directly on the moist edge or standing slightly in the water. Thanks to its height of approx. 20 to 30 cm, the calamus remains pleasantly low so that it does not obstruct the view of the water surface. At the same time, it provides structure between higher-growing bank plants and lower ground cover plants.
The variegated calamus is particularly valuable in pond design because it combines well with many other pond and marsh plants. It is suitable for both naturalistic planting schemes and more modern pond designs that emphasise clear shapes and calm areas. Thanks to its hardiness zone 1-2, it is also suitable for perennial pond edge planting. The plant is supplied in a pot (approx. 10 cm). For easy handling around the pond, we recommend using it in a plant basket - depending on the structure - so that the location remains stable and you can easily move the plant if necessary.

Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events (e.g. brown leaves or broken shoots). We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.

Zoo Roco tip: Place the variegated calamus in the most beautiful spot where you walk past it every day: It looks particularly elegant when planted in small groups and its fine leaves are reflected in the water. For more control, we recommend using a planting basket - this will keep the edges neat and you can easily divide or reposition the plant later.

Dwarf water lily - Nymphaea pygmaea rubra
Dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ red (18cm)The dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ brings an elegant splash of colour to the water’s surface with its red flowers. Thanks to its compact form, it is particularly suitable for smaller garden ponds as well as mini ponds and bowls. Ideal if you want a water lily that doesn’t take up too much space.Dwarf-form water lily – suitable for small water areasFlower colour: redGrowth: compact, for a controlled leaf areaArea of application: Garden pond, mini pond, tub/bowlTechnical dataBotanical name: Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’English name: Dwarf water lilyFlower colour: redPlanting depth: -10 to -40cmFlowering period: June to September Pot size: approx. 18 cmWith the dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ you bring the typical water lily atmosphere into the garden – even if your pond is rather small or you want to plant in a mini pond or tub. Dwarf water lilies are designed to unfold a harmonious effect in a limited space: Floating leaves on the surface and an attractive blossom, without the water area being quickly completely covered. The ‘Rubra’ variety creates an elegant, easily visible splash of colour with its red flowers.Especially with smaller garden ponds, balanced planting is crucial. Water lilies that grow too vigorously can quickly dominate the surface and “close” the water effect. In comparison, a dwarf water lily remains more compact and is therefore a good choice if you want a calm, well-kept look and nevertheless do not want to do without the classic water lily eye-catcher. ‘Rubra’ is particularly effective when positioned so that you have a good view of the flowers from your seat or terrace – as the red shades clearly stand out against the water and greenery. For establishing, stable placement is important, ideally in a planting basket or a suitable container. This way the rhizome lies undisturbed, and you can adjust the position if necessary. If you are looking for a compact water lily with a strong colour, Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ is a fitting choice for a natural yet controlled pond design.Note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it may occur that plants are slightly damaged during postal delivery or by other unforeseen events. This includes both brown leaves and bent branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Put dwarf water lilies in a planting basket so you can easily adjust their position. If the plant is still small at first, start out higher (shallower) and lower them later – this often encourages quicker growth and flowering.

When the garden starts up again after the winter, its yellow flowers from March to May (III-V) provide a bright eye-catcher by the water. This is particularly valuable at the edge of the pond: many waterside plants only sprout vigorously later - the marsh marigold, on the other hand, brings colour early and looks natural and harmonious. With a growth height of approx. 30 to 40 cm , the plant is ideal for the foreground to midground. It is ideal for the edges of ponds, in damp border beds or in areas that are permanently fresh to wet. The recommended planting depth of 0 to -15 cm makes it perfect for the bank and shallow water edge zone: directly in moist soil at the edge or standing slightly in the water. Caltha palustris looks particularly beautiful when planted in small groups - this creates a calm, natural area that visually softens the edge of the pond.Delivery in a 9 cm pot makes planting easier. If you want a very clear pond edge or want to keep the position flexible, a plant basket is a practical solution: it keeps the marsh marigold stable in the desired place and can be easily moved if necessary. Thanks to its hardiness zone 1-2, Caltha palustris is suitable for permanent pond installations in many regions and is an uncomplicated choice for easy-care, near-natural pond edge planting.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo Roco tip: Place the marsh marigold where you often walk past in spring - it is a perfect starting point for the pond season. If the water level fluctuates greatly in spring, place the plant in the plant basket at a depth of 0 to -15 cm so that it remains stable and grows reliably.

Creeping Mazus white (18cm) - Mazus reptans
Creeping Mazus for the garden pond - Mazus reptans whiteMazus reptans white is a low-growing ground cover that quickly green up damp areas around the edge of a garden pond. The white flowers appear from April to September (IV-IX) and provide a neat, fresh look for a long time. Thanks to zone 1-2, the plant is suitable for perennial planting.Flowering time: IV-IX (April to September)Flower colour: whiteWinter hardiness: Zone 1 - 2Pot: approx. 18 cmPlant specificationsThey quickly close gaps at the edge of the pond and create a natural, soft transition between the water and the garden. The long flowering period IV-IX keeps the border attractive for many months. The low, creeping growth looks neat and helps to reduce open soil in moist areas.Technical data:Botanical name: Mazus reptans (white)German name: Creeping MazusPlanting depth: Bank zoneFlowering time: VI-IXWinter hardiness: Zone 1/2 Mazus reptans white is a reliable ground cover for moist locations - ideal for landscaping around the garden pond. Small gaps often appear along the edges of banks, in the swamp zone or along streams where open soil remains visible. Here, creeping Mazus provides a natural finish: it grows flat, visually connects different planting areas and makes the transition from water to garden appear much softer.A particular advantage is the long flowering period from April to September (IV-IX). This means that Mazus reptans brings bright accents to the border for many months and at the same time looks well-groomed without you having to constantly replant or mend. The white flowers go well with practically any pond design - whether natural or more modern - and can be combined well with taller waterside plants. This makes the Mazus particularly suitable as a "carpet" in the foreground, while structure-giving pond plants round off the picture behind it.For placement by the garden pond, we recommend a location that remains evenly moist. Place the Mazus where you want a dense border - for example at the edge of the pond, between stones or at the edge of stepping stones. This not only keeps the bank zone visually calmer, it also looks more stable and less "torn up". As there is no information on height, planting depth and pot size, these points remain neutral; in practice, a moist, suitable location at the edge is particularly important.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, plants may be slightly damaged by post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: Plant Mazus reptans white at the edge of the pond where you want to break up "hard edges" - e.g. between stones or along the edge of the liner. If the location becomes drier at times in summer, a thin layer of fine gravel or mulch at the edge will help to keep the soil moist for longer.

The bright red flowers make it the ideal eye-catcher around the garden pond - especially where many green and yellow tones dominate and a clear accent is desired. Due to its growth height of approx. 60 to 80 cm, it adds structure to the bank planting and is ideal as a background plant, in front of which lower ground cover and shallow water plants come into their own.The specified flowering period from May to August (V-VIII) ensures that your pond edge will look lively for a long time. For a harmonious overall look, we recommend planting in small groups or as a recurring element along the shoreline. This creates a natural, well thought-out design without the pond edge becoming unruly. The cardinal lobelia looks particularly attractive when the flowers are slightly above the waterline - the colour is reflected in the water and enhances the effect. With a recommended planting depth of 0 to -15 cm, Lobelia cardinalis is ideal for the edge and shallow water zone. Depending on the pond structure, place the plant directly in moist bank soil or in a very shallow water area. A plant basket can help to keep the position stable and make it easier to move the plant if necessary - especially if you want to adapt the design seasonally. Thanks to zone 1-2, the cardinal lobelia is suitable for many regions and is an exciting choice if you want to create a permanent pond edge but still want to work with clear colour accents.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: It is best to place Lobelia cardinalis in the shallow water zone so that the roots are evenly moist (0 to -15 cm) - this ensures stable growth. For a particularly attractive look, place the plant where it can be reflected in the water and combine it in the foreground with low ground cover plants at the edge of the pond.

At the edge of the pond, there are often areas that remain evenly fresh to moist - this is exactly where the marsh cranesbill creates a natural, calm effect. It closes gaps, visually connects different planting areas and softens the transition between water and garden. With a height of approx. 30 to 40 cm, the plant remains pleasantly compact. This makes it ideal for the foreground of bankside planting, along stones, edges or stepping stones. Geranium palustre looks particularly harmonious in small groups: this creates a flat, "grown" look that does not overload the edge of the pond and keeps the water surface in view. The flowering period from June to August (VI-VIII) falls in the peak season - perfect for giving the edge zone a lively and well-tended appearance in summer. The recommended planting depth of 0 to -15 cm allows for flexible placement. Depending on the pond structure, plant the marsh cranesbill directly in moist bank soil or place it in the very shallow edge area. The 9 cm pot is particularly suitable if you want to plant several plants to quickly achieve an even border effect. A planting basket can be helpful for a controllable, clean pond edge - this keeps the plant where it works best and allows it to be moved easily if necessary. Thanks to zone 1-2, Geranium palustre is hardy and therefore a good choice for perennial pond plants. If you are looking for an easy-care, compact perennial for the edge of a pond that combines well and provides additional vibrancy in summer, this marsh cranesbill is a suitable addition. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: Plant Geranium palustre at the edge of the pond as a "connecting plant" between taller waterside perennials and low ground cover plants. At a depth of 0 to -15 cm (or in moist bank soil), it grows in particularly harmoniously - and in small groups, the edge immediately looks more natural.

It looks particularly harmonious in small groups or as a recurring element along the bank - this creates a natural rhythm that makes the pond look as if it has been cast from a single mould. The flowering period from June to August (VI-VIII) complements the season; however, the focus with this plant is usually on the attractive leaf structure. The recommended planting depth of 0 to -15 cm makes the palm frond sedge suitable for the shore and shallow water zone. Plant it in moist bank soil or place it in a very shallow water area - depending on how your pond is constructed.Delivery in an 18 cm pot makes planting easier and gives the plant a good root volume for a secure start. If you prefer a neat, easily controllable pond edge, a plant basket is a practical solution: the plant remains stable in the desired location and can be easily moved if necessary. Thanks to zone 1-2, Carex muskingumensis is suitable for perennial pond installations in many regions and is an easy-care choice if you want to combine structure, height and a natural appearance.Note on dispatch: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo Roco tip: Place the palm frond sedge so that it "frames the pond" from your main visual axis - for example to the left and right of a seating area overlooking the water. At a depth of 0 to -15 cm, it looks particularly natural, and in the plant basket the shape remains clean and can be corrected at any time.

It flowers from June to August (VI-VIII), is suitable for planting at a depth of 0 to -15 cm and is hardy in zones 1-2.Flowering time: VI-VIII (June to August)Height: approx. 30-40 cmPlanting depth: 0 to -15 cmPot size: approx. 9cmPlant specifications:They naturally green the edge of the pond and create a soft transition between the water and the garden. The flowering period VI-VIII brings a lively accent to the shore zone in the main season. Thanks to the planting depth of 0 to -15 cm, the plant can be placed flexibly at the moist edge or in very shallow water.Technical data:Botanical name: Geranium palustre (often also listed as Geranium palustris)German name: Marsh cranesbillHeight (cm): 30 / 40 cmPlanting depth: 0 / -15 cmFlowering time: VI-VIIIWinter hardiness: Zone 1 / 2Pot size: 9 cmWith Geranium palustre (Marsh Cranes-bill), you are choosing a perennial that is particularly suitable for damp areas around the garden pond. Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this.

It is precisely this clear form that makes it so popular: it brings structure to the bank planting, looks tidy and provides an exciting contrast to soft-growing marsh and flowering plants. Cyprus grass looks particularly harmonious on modern ponds or clearly defined shorelines – but it can also serve as a deliberate point of structure in more natural settings. With a height of approx. 60 to 80 cm, Cyperus alternifolius is suitable for mid- to background edge plantings. It visually builds up the bank zone without completely covering the pond. The specified flowering period from May to July (V–VII) fits in with the seasonal cycle, although for this plant, it is usually the leaf and growth form that is most prominent. Planted in small groups, it creates a calm, architectural effect; planted individually, Cyprus grass becomes a real eye-catcher. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes the plant ideal for the bank and shallow water zone. You can plant it directly in moist bank soil or place it in very shallow water.Note on shipping: We do our best to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the utmost care, it may happen that plants suffer slight damage through postal shipping or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We do not accept liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Place Cyperus alternifolius so that the "umbrellas" are clearly visible at eye level – it looks most beautiful when slightly reflected in the water. For a neat pond edge, place the pot or basket at a depth of 0 to –15 cm and combine a low groundcover in the front so that the transition appears natural.

The plant does not appear "technical" or artificial, but blends very naturally into mixed border plantings. With a height of approx. 30 to 40 cm, the brook carnation root is ideal for the foreground to middle ground. It brings structure to the edge without obscuring the view of the water. Its flowering period from April to June (IV-VI) makes it particularly valuable for the start of the season: while many pond plants only really take shape later, Geum rivale brings life to the edge of the pond as early as spring. Geum rivale can be used in a variety of ways in the design: as a small group along the shoreline, as a companion plant between grasses and low ground cover or as a connecting element between the edge of the pond and the neighbouring bed. The 9 cm pot is ideal if you want to plant several plants to quickly create a harmonious, natural look. Thanks to its hardiness zone 1, Geum rivale is robust and suitable for perennial planting. This means that your pond edge planting remains attractive for many weeks and creates bright accents that are beautifully reflected in the water. Growing to a height of approx. 60 to 80 cm, the frogspoon is ideal for adding structure to the edge planting - for example behind lower shallow water plants or as a natural background for flowering companions. The recommended planting depth of 0 to -40 cm gives you plenty of room for manoeuvre: plant the frogspoon directly in the moist bank zone or a little deeper in the shallow water area, depending on the pond structure and the desired effect. For neat, controlled planting, we recommend using a plant basket - this keeps the position stable and makes it easier to move or divide the plant if necessary. In this way, you can create a pond edge planting with little effort that looks natural and provides reliable structure throughout the season.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. If you want a clear pond edge, use a plant basket so that the plant stays where you have planned it.

Arum italicum (9cm) - Arum italicum
Arum italicum - arumArum italicum is a striking structural plant for moist, semi-shady to shady edges around the garden pond. At a height of 30-40 cm, it is ideal for visually structuring bank areas and closing gaps in the planting. It flowers between April and June.Flower colour: redFlowering period: IV-VI (April to June)Height: approx. 30-40 cmPot: approx. 9 cmPlant specifications:Ideal for structuring bank areas and damp garden spotsFits well in shadier pond edge zones, where classic flowering plants are often weakerSuitable for perennial design (hardy)Technical dataBotanical name: Arum italicumGerman name: ArumFlowering time: IV-VIWinter hardiness: Zone 1Height: 30 / 40 cmDepth: 0 / -40 cmWith Arum italicum (arum), you are choosing a plant for your garden pond that is particularly impressive due to its structuring effect. There are often areas around ponds that are permanently slightly damp and are also occasionally shaded - this is exactly where the arum shows its strengths. It is suitable for visually defining edge zones, calming transitions and harmoniously complementing the planting without the pond edge appearing overloaded. The plant reaches a height of approx. 30 to 40 cm and therefore fits well in the foreground to midground. Arum italicum is particularly attractive for the early season: the flowering period from April to June (IV-VI) already brings life to the edge planting when many summer-flowering pond plants are still being established. This creates a harmonious annual cycle - with an early accent that keeps your pond design interesting for longer. For the location, the specified planting depth of 0 to -40 cm is a guide value for moist areas by the water. In the garden pond, we recommend placing the plant in the moist bank zone or in an easily controllable area so that you can easily control its growth. In permanently wet areas, a stable position is important - depending on the pond structure, a plant basket can help to position the plant securely and move it if necessary. Thanks to its hardiness zone 1, Arum italicum is suitable for long-term, perennial landscaping. This makes Arum italicum an interesting choice if you are looking for robust structural plants for damp, cooler locations.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo Roco tip: In garden ponds, arum looks particularly beautiful behind low shallow-water plants, where it "builds up" the edge zone without obstructing the view of the water. Place it in the moist bank soil rather than freely in the open water - this keeps the plant stable and the edge of the pond neat.

Such "calming elements" are particularly important around ponds: they bring order to the bank planting, make transitions look more natural and prevent the edge area from appearing visually restless. Thanks to its compact height of approx. 30 to 40 cm, the dwarf rush is ideal for the foreground to midground - where you want structure but want the water surface to remain visible. The dwarf rush can be used very flexibly as it is suitable for a planting depth of 0 to -15 cm. This makes it perfect for the bank and shallow water zone: directly in moist marginal soil or standing slightly in the water. It looks particularly attractive when planted in small groups or as a recurring element along the edge of the pond. This creates a natural rhythm that visually "captures" the pond. The flowering period is from June to August (VI-VIII). Even if the flowers are often not the centre of attention with rushes, the seasonal indication gives you a good orientation for the development over the summer.Due to its hardiness (zone 1-2), Juncus ensifolius is suitable for perennial pond installations and is an easy-care addition to naturalised, permanent shoreline areas. For a clean, controllable pond design, we recommend using it in a plant basket, depending on the design. This ensures that the plant remains stable in the desired position and you can easily move or divide it if necessary.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo Roco tip: Use the dwarf rush as a "framing plant": place it along the edge of the pond at a depth of 0 to -15 cm to make transitions between stones, the edge of the liner and higher-growing shore plants appear calmer. The line remains particularly clean and easy to maintain in plant baskets.
