Especially with ponds, a “shallow” impression is quickly created if only low plants are standing in the marginal area. Valerian creates a beautiful counterpoint here: it grows upright, brings volume to the bank zone and can be combined excellently with lower pond edge plants that soften the transition to the water in the foreground.The flowering period from May to August (V–VIII) ensures that the pond edge appears lively for much of the season. As there is no indication of flower colour, this point remains neutral – in the garden, however, the overall effect of height, structure and flowering period is often the focus for valerian anyway.
