Der Leopardgecko (Eublepharis macularius) Herkunftsgebiet: Eublepharis macularius kommt im Südosten Afghanistans, Pakistans bis in den Nordwesten Indiens vor. Lebensraum: Der Leopardgecko ist dämmerungs- und nachtaktiv bewohnt in seiner Heimat steppenartige Gebiete, kommt aber auch bis in 2100m Höhe noch vor. Er bewohnt natürliche und selbstgegrabene Wohnhöhlen, die er bei Dämmerung zur Nahrungssuche verlässt.Der Leopardgecko gehört zu den beliebtesten Echsen, da er ein recht anspruchsloser Pflegling ist.Auch die verschiedenen Farbvarianten und sein friedliches Verhalten tragen zu der Beliebtheit bei.Die Jungtiere zeigen eine dunkle Querbänderung auf dem Rücken, während erwachsen Exemplare, die den Namen gebende Punktzeichnung haben. Die Grundfarbe ist ein zartes bis sattes Gelb, auf welchem zahlreiche dunkle Flecken und Tupfen zu sehen sind. Der Bauch ist einfarbig weiss. Die Augen sind mit beweglichen Lidern versehen und die Extremitäten besitzen kräftige Krallen aber keine Haftlamellen an den Zehen. Der Leopardgecko kann bei Bedarf seinen Schwanz abwerfen und wächst als sogenannter Rübenschwanz wieder nach. Haltung: Eine Gruppe von 1 - 3 Tieren zu halten benötigt ein Terrarium von 100x50x50cm.Der Boden wird mit Sand bedeckt, der grab bar ist, so dass sich die Tiere auch Höhlen graben können. Des Weiteren benötigt man ausreichen Versteckplätze.Eine flache Wasserschale darf nicht fehlen, obwohl die Tiere nur in den seltensten Fällen auch daraus trinken. Wasser wird von den Tieren eher von Steinen und Korkstücken geleckt, welche einmal täglich besprüht werden. Tagestemperaturen zwischen 26 - 28°C, welche bei Nacht ruhig auf 20°C abfallen dürfen, lassen die Tiere sehr gut gedeihen. Eine Luftfeuchtigkeit von rund 50 % lässt sich durch abendliches Sprühen sehr leicht erreichen. Futter: Leopardgeckos sind keine besonderen Feinschmecker. Sie fressen alle Sorten Insekten, derer sie fangen können. Natürlich muss darauf geachtet werden, dass immer genügend, der Größe der Tiere entsprechendes Futtermaterial im Becken ist. Ein junger Leopardgecko mit ca. 12 cm Körperlänge frisst im Durchschnitt 6 mittlere Grillen, während ein ausgewachsenes Exemplar 4 - 5 große Heuschrecken vertilgt. Wie bei allen Echsen empfiehlt es sich auch hier die Futterinsekten vor der Fütterung mit Kalk und manchmal mit Vitaminen zu bestreuen.Bevor Sie sich für Leopardgeckos entscheiden, sollten Sie unbedingt ein entsprechendes Fachbuch gelesen haben.Für jede Tierhaltung gilt: Kinder müssen von den Eltern angeleitet, beaufsichtigt und kontrolliert werden. Kinder müssen lernen, dass ein Tier seine eigenen Bedürfnisse und Lebensgewohnheiten hat und dies respektieren.
