Von allen in nord- bis mitteleuropäischen Gefilden verfügbaren Muscheln dürfte einzig und allein die Miesmuschel (Mytilus edulis) aquaristisch von Belang sein.
Sie säumt die Küsten der kühleren Meere und geschützen Fjorde - bekannt sollte sie wohl jedem sein, der schon mal die Nordseeküste besucht hat.

Mit Hilfe ihrer sogenannten Byssusfäden, welche in einer speziellen Drüse erzeugt werden, heftet sich die Miesmuschel auf allen einigermaßen stabilen Oberflächen fest wie z.B. Steinen, Tauen, Buhnen, Kaimauern oder auch auf Artgenossen.
Dies tut sie vornehmlich in der schwebstoffreichen Gezeitenzone, wo zum Teil ausgedehnte Muschelbänke zu finden sind.

Miesmuscheln sind Filtrierer, d.h. sie pumpen mit Geisselbewegungen Seewasser durch die geöffneten Schalen in ihre Kiemen. Diese haben eine netzartige Struktur, um verwertbare Mikroorganismen und Phytoplankton herauszufiltern. Eine erwachsene Muschel schafft hierbei bis zu 70 Liter Wasserdurchsatz pro Tag.
Mytilus edulis ist reich an Eisen, Vitamin B12 und Omega-3-Fettsäuren.

Futtertip:
Zur Verfütterung kleiner bis mittelgroßer Fische sollte dann Muschelfleisch in maulgerechte Stücke zerteilt und direkt verfüttert werden.
Für größere Fische kann die Muscheln halbiert werden, so kommen diese zudem in den Genuss des algenhaltigen Mageninhalts der Muscheln.
