Rodentia 65 - Mongoose
Wagners Gerbil
Exotic animal keeping on the brink of extinction?
Contents:
Cover story: Mongoose
Ever since Rudyard Kipling had the mongoose “Riki Tiki Tavi” fight a cobra in his famous short story, Europeans have assumed that mongooses (family Herpestidae) feed primarily on snakes. In fact, these predators, ranging in size from 24 cm (pygmy mongoose) to 58 cm (white-tailed mongoose), hunt a wide variety of small vertebrates, insects and other invertebrates, and occasionally eat fruit as well. Due to their size and interesting behaviour, meerkats (Suricata suricatta), zebra mongooses (Mungos mungo) and others are not only extremely popular in zoological institutions; various species are now also kept in private homes. You can find out more about these cunning Old World predators in the cover story of the next issue of RODENTIA Exoten.
