Mealworms - Tenebrio molitor
The mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) is one of the oldest commercially bred feeder animals. They are relatively easy to breed.
For birds
in small quantities also for reptiles
The mealworm is actually the beetle larva of the meal beetle. It hatches from an egg and grows to a size of approx. 25 mm after moulting several times. Eventually the beetle larva pupates, from which a beetle emerges again. Mealworms are among the oldest commercially bred feeder animals. They are relatively easy to breed and are produced in large quantities. Mealworms are actually pests which are mainly known from grain mills, as the larvae prefer to feed on flour or its waste products. As it is not possible to use insecticides in mills, an infestation is difficult to control.
Mealworms are a classic food for soft-feeding birds. Hundreds of tons of these beetle larvae are produced throughout Europe every year for this purpose. A bird's stomach is well adapted to this type of food. A mealworm consists largely of a hard, chitinous shell and, due to its fairly simple diet, contains few nutrients. The stomach of a reptile, on the other hand, is not well adapted to these conditions. If too many or only mealworms are fed to reptiles, deficiency symptoms or obesity can occur. You can also see from the animals' faeces that mealworms are only poorly digested. Feeding mealworms with vegetables or fruit before feeding only has the effect of a certain vitaminization, which could also be achieved by dusting the beetle larvae with a vitamin preparation. The high fat content of mealworms is another reason why the larvae should only be given to reptiles as supplementary food.
For many bird lovers, however, they represent the staple food of their favourites and this is mainly what they are bred for. At temperatures below 10 degrees C. the animals become motionless but are not dead. This can be utilised for storage. At temperatures of 6-8 degrees C. the animals can be stored for several weeks without food.Order by Sunday evening - delivery on ThursdayOrders received by Sunday evening will be sent by A-Post on Wednesday or Thursday. Please provide a recipient address where the parcel can be delivered. We accept no responsibility for parcels that are delivered late or collected late.
The live feeder animals in the shop are only available at this price on Wednesdays - prices per tin are otherwise Fr. 1.00 per tin higher, as we also feed and care for the feeder animals.
Even with the greatest care, it can happen that feeder animals die due to temperature fluctuations or unpredictable events. We accept no liability for this.
Welzhofer building food for wild birds
Build-up food for young birds and their parents as year-round bird food
The build-up feed has been specially developed to quickly strengthen young birds and their parents and for weakened or older birds. To enable the birds to eat quickly and efficiently, we have ground most of the ingredients and mixed them together with the oat flakes with plenty of natural fat. Thanks to its composition of animal fats, vegetable oils and its high content of proteins and vitamins, the build-up food is suitable for young and old birds alike. Bird parents can quickly pick up the fine food to strengthen themselves or feed it pre-digested to their rearing brood.
Advantages
Specially developed to strengthen young, weakened and older birds. The fine texture of the ingredients makes it easy to ingest and allows its ingredients to take effect quickly.
Ideally suited for all wild birds, the ingredients meet their nutritional requirements.
No residues at the feeding place, as the very high-quality, shell-free build-up food is very tasty and is therefore picked up completely.
All raw materials are cleaned of ragweed and weed seeds.
The bird food contains only natural raw materials of the highest quality.
Completely free from preservatives, additives and artificial flavorings.
Healthy raw materials strengthen vitality and the immune system. Soft, easily digested oat flakes are ideal for baby birds and weakened birds. Pre-digested, they are ideal for feeding the brood. The animal fat is processed without additives, so it retains its full flavor. Peanuts and sunflower seeds have a high content of vegetable fats and provide valuable fatty acids. In addition to fructose, apples contain many healthy vitamins. Insects are an ideal source of protein. They are part of the diet of wild birds, as are herbs, which provide the birds with essential oils and vitamins. The minerals contained in the feed promote the digestive system, bone structure and eggshell formation.
All ingredients are carefully processed by Mother Nature to the highest quality. All products are processed using only natural raw materials of the highest quality. They can be mixed with each other and are therefore ideal for every need and every season.
This product is a mixed feed for free-living birds with oat flakes, animal fat, peanuts, shelled sunflower seeds, dried apple pieces, dried insects, minerals and dried herbs.

Easily available pellets for a smooth transition from baby to junior food
Hikari Medaka No-Mai Next was developed to promote the growth of young medakas after the baby feeding phase. The food is designed to spread the pellets quickly over the water surface so that the fish can easily reach them.
The included probiotic formula Hikari-Germ™ supports digestion and immune defense and can help improve water quality by reducing waste from incomplete digestion.
The food is ideally suited for medaka in the juvenile stage (approx. 1-2.5 cm long) and serves as an intermediate link between baby food and adult food.
Zoo Roco tip
Feed several small portions a day instead of one large one to avoid overfeeding and water pollution. Reduce the amount of food in cooler or very warm temperatures and when the water quality is poor. Medaka No-Mai Breed from Hikari
Hikari Med aka-No-Mai Breed is a specially developed food for medaka (Japanese rice fish) in the breeding phase. Thanks to its high energy density, targeted nutrients and probiotics, it supports spawning activity, the immune system and a high hatching rate.
Advantages
Breeding-optimized formula with high calorie density

Semi-floating pellets that spread evenly over the water surface
Contains polyunsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) & phospholipids to improve egg quality and hatchability
Ideal for adult medaka, especially during the spawning phase
Hikari Medaka-No-Mai Breed is a high performance breeder diet specially formulated to provide the best possible support for medaka in their reproductive phase. The pellets are designed to be semi-floating - they spread quickly over the water surface so that both strong and weakened females can eat more easily
The combination of Hikari-Germ™ (probiotic) and a balanced mix of nutrients helps to strengthen the immune system while reducing waste formation. According to the manufacturer, the HUFA and phospholipids it contains contribute to an increased hatching rate and improved egg development.
During cold days or high water temperatures, the amount of food should be reduced as the animals' metabolism reacts more slowly or sensitively.
Zoo Roco tip
Feed several small portions per day instead of one large one - this will keep the water cleaner and provide your medaka with an optimum supply of nutrients. Combine Medaka-No-Mai Breed with Medaka-No-Mai Next or Baby formulas as soon as young animals are present. If the tap water is hard, use decalcified or filtered water to protect the food pellets and water quality.Customers also searched for: Medaka food, food for rice fish, breeding food Medaka, Hikari Medaka, Hikari No-Mai, breeding food, fish breeding food Switzerland, food for Medaka, premium food Medaka

Buffalo worms / cereal mould beetle larvae
(Alphitobius diaperinus)
Cereal mould beetle larvae, also buffalo worms called, are another type of beetle larvae that are fed both to terrarium animals and to soft-eating birds.
for smaller reptiles and birds
1-1.2cm
Cereal mould beetle larvae, also called buffalo worms, are another type of beetle larvae that are fed both to terrarium animals and to soft-eating birds. The buffalo worm only grows to about 10 to 12 mm long and is therefore mainly of interest for smaller animals. Cereal mould beetle larvae are also known as pests in Central Europe. However, they do not like cold temperatures and should also be stored at about 20 degrees C. As the animals are very active and therefore have a high metabolism, the worms should be fed regularly with flour and fruit during storage, otherwise the animals lose a lot of weight and also pupate quickly.
