Is keeping exotics facing extinction?
Party politics under the magnifying glass
Contents:
Exotic small mammals as attractions in zoological gardens? For decades, this was unthinkable, as for much of the last century people mainly went to “animal shows” to marvel at large, wild and preferably dangerous animals from distant lands. Bears, lions, tigers, elephants – these were the stars and crowd-pullers. In recent decades, however, a process of rethinking and realignment has begun: The focus is no longer on the fascination of the dangerous, but the chance to bring visitors closer to entire ecosystems in their uniqueness and significance for our planet. In near-natural enclosures, exotic small mammals now often play one of the leading roles. In the next issue of RODENTIA Exotics, we would like to introduce you, dear readers, to a few “new crowd favourites” and their enclosures in zoological gardens.
