Viele Haustiere können aufgrund der Haltungsbedingungen ihre Krallen
nicht ausreichend abnutzen, sodass eine Krallenpflege durch den
Tierhalter oder den Tierarzt notwendig wird. Bei Meerschweinchen zum
Beispiel müssen die Krallen häufig mit Hilfe von Krallenscheren oder
Krallenzangen gekürzt werden, da die Tiere meist auf weicher Einstreu
gehalten werden und die stetig nachwachsenden Krallen sich auf dem
weichen Untergrund nicht wie in ihrem natürlichen Lebensraum automatisch
abnutzen und kürzen.
Bei Katzen ist die Krallenpflege mit Hilfe von Krallenzangen und
-scheren nur dann notwendig, wenn die Katze aufgrund von Krankheit oder
hohem Alter nicht mehr selbst in der Lage ist, eine Kürzung durch das
Wetzen an Bäumen, Kratzmöbeln oder ähnlichem selbst vorzunehmen.
Bei Hunden ist die Krallenpflege immer dann notwendig, wenn die
Spaziergänge auf zu weichen Untergründen stattfinden oder einfach zu
kurz sind. Haben die Krallen die richtige Länge, berühren sie den Boden
wenig oder gar nicht. Ob ein Schneiden dieser notwendig ist, merkt der
Hundebesitzer in der Regel dann, wenn der Hund auf Parkett oder
Fliesenboden klickende Geräusche verursacht.
Bei allen Tieren gilt: Werden die Krallen zu lang, können sie zu
Fehlstellungen der Pfoten und Schmerzen führen und im schlimmsten Fall
sogar einwachsen und Blutungen verursachen. Um dies zu verhindern,
sollten die Krallen regelmässig kontrolliert werden.
Beim Kürzen der Krallen ist es wichtig, einen ausreichenden Abstand zum
belebten Anteil zu halten, den man an seiner rosa Farbe erkennt. In
diesem Bereich verlaufen Nerven und Blutgefässe, zu denen ein Abstand
von 2-3mm eingehalten werden sollte.
Ob für das Kürzen der Krallen eine Krallenschere oder Krallenzange
verwendet wird, hängt von der Grösse und Beschaffenheit der Kralle ab.
Eine Schnittlängenbegrenzung ist sinnvoll, um eine versehentliche zu
starke Kürzung zu verhindern. Das kann zum Beispiel bei Tieren mit
dunklen Krallen sinnvoll sein.
Neben Krallenzange und Krallenschere gibt es auch Krallenschleifer, mit
denen die Krallen von Hunden und Katzen abgeschliffen statt abgeknipst
werden. Durch diese langsame Annäherung an die optimale Krallenlänge
reduziert sich das Risiko für Verletzungen der Blutgefässe und Nerven,
die in der Kralle verlaufen.
