Spirulina are blue-green algae, some species of which, such as the S. platensis used here, have ideal protein levels for feeding ornamental fish. The spirulina content of 20 % in the JBL PRONOVO SPIRULINA food is optimal - more would not be healthy for the fish! The natural astaxanthin (a carotene) in the algae is responsible for the beautiful coloration of the fish. This is another reason why spirulina algae are very popular for feeding ornamental fish.
Probiotic or prebiotic - which is better?
Probiotic foods, such as some types of yogurt, contain live bacterial cultures to promote health, but only if they are consumed in large quantities. Such foods, including probiotic fish food, can easily spoil and then have the opposite effect. Incidentally, the positive effect on health is controversial.
Pre- or prebiotics are "substrates that are selectively used by host microorganisms and provide health benefits." Scientists agree that they promote digestion and therefore health. In the case of our fish, there is another important aspect: Better digestion results in less excretion and therefore less pollution of the water, which keeps the water cleaner and reduces algae problems.
Flakes or granules?
Honestly, it's a question of faith! There are only a few arguments for or against the type of food. If you use an automatic feeder such as the JBL AutoFood, you MUST choose granulated food, as almost all automatic feeders are only suitable for granules. If an automatic feeder is due on your next vacation, get your fish used to the granules from the feeder RIGHT AWAY. Some fish actually find it difficult to switch from granules to flakes or vice versa. Imagine that you have always eaten soft cornflakes and are now giving them wholemeal muesli for the first time.
