In the rift valley lakes of East Africa (Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika) many cichlids have specialized in grazing the algae growth with the micro-organisms living in it from the rocks (herbivorous growth eaters). JBL PRONOVO MALAWI was developed for these species.
In contrast, almost all other species in both lakes live predatorily and eat fish, microorganisms, shrimps and fish fry. Some even eat only the scales of other fish (Plecodus). JBL PRONOVO TANGANYIKA was developed for the predatory species of both lakes. If both groups are kept together in ONE aquarium, it is essential to offer both types of food. In this way each type of food gets the right food for it.
Typical predators from Lake Tanganyika: Lamprologus, Neolamprologus, Julidochromis, Cyphotilapia, Telmatochromis, Chalinochromis Typical predators from Lake Malawi: Trematocranus, Haplochromis, Nimbochromis, Sciaenochromis, Labidochromis.
Advantages of JBL foods: Use of pure fish protein without cheap fish meal. Optimal protein-fat ratio. Mainly proteins from aquatic animals. Reduction of algae growth and optimal fish growth due to adjusted phosphate content.
Prebiotic: Prebiotics are "substrates that are selectively utilized by host microorganisms and impart health benefits." Here, scientists agree that they promote digestion and thus health. In the case of our fish, there is another essential aspect: With better digestion, less is excreted and thus the water is less polluted, resulting in fewer algae problems and keeping the water cleaner.
Since the majority of maintained cichlids from Lake Tanganyika are predatory, the food for predatory species was named PRONOVO TANGANYIKA. Since most of the species kept in Lake Malawi are predators, JBL has named this food PRONOVO MALAWI.
