Axolotls belong to the amphibians, like newts and frogs. Unlike other amphibians, they retain their larval stage with external gill tufts throughout their lives. Axolotls originally come from a lake in Mexico, which was located at a high altitude and therefore had low temperatures around 20 °C. Today, the city of Mexico City has expanded to such an extent that the lake lies within the city and contains hardly any living creatures due to the influx of garbage and other pollution. Thus, the axolotl is considered extinct in its original habitat.
