Desert locust (Schistozerca gregaria)

The desert locust (Schistozerca gregaria) is one of the largest commercially bred food animals. Females reach a total length with wings of over 75 mm in some cases.

  • popular food animal
  • for reptiles and amphibians
  • larger than the migratory locust
  • medium

The desert locust is one of the largest commercially bred food animals. Females reach a total length with wings of over 75 mm in some cases. Males usually remain somewhat smaller. This means that desert locusts are up to 30% larger than, for example, the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria). The animals are pink-grey in colour after moulting. Over the next 6-10 days, the colouring changes to a strong yellow, especially in the males. However, the animals have the most beautiful colouring and patterning during the juvenile and subadult stage. Here, the animals are also coloured lemon yellow with a black pattern. It is precisely this colouring that arouses the prey drive in many reptile species, which makes the desert locust particularly popular with many terrarium keepers.

Unfortunately, the desert locust is not as productive as the migratory locust and rearing the animals takes up to 2/3 longer. On the other hand, it can be bred almost all year round, as it is not too demanding on special types of food.

The desert locust is an excellent food insect because it can usually survive shipping without damage, even in extreme heat and cold, and can survive for up to 2 weeks after shipping without the addition of food.

Desert locusts are generally accepted by all lizards. Experience has shown that they are particularly favoured by large lizards such as bearded dragons, water dragons, basilisks, varans, ruffed lizards etc.. They are particularly popular with many species of chameleon, as they are particularly attracted to the yellow colouring of juvenile and sub-adult animals.

Good quality, but too expensive.

13 pieces for CHF 4.50 is very poor value for money. I am very happy with all the other food animals I ordered, but the desert locusts are really too expensive. It's better to buy them from Qualipet.

Our feedback: Dear customer Thank you for your review and feedback on the price/performance ratio. We have just checked with Qualipet. The tin costs CHF 6.90 in stores, but you cannot order the item online. We hope you will consider us again in the future. Your Zoo Roco team

Healthy food animals at very fair conditions.

The food animals are very fit and appear much healthier than those from the shop. We have only had 2-3 dead animals so far (orders 3-4 packs/month) and are extremely satisfied. The prices are great and the delivery time and packaging are very animal-friendly.

I am very satisfied and will continue to order feed animals.

The food animals have always arrived in very good condition. They are fit and well fed. I am very satisfied.

Good but

The grasshoppers were in perfect health, but should have been taped up for safety (they were packed with about 20kg of other material, and that moves around in a box). Three of them managed to escape, but they were very easy to catch again and in my opinion not too bad.

Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor)
Contents Food animals: approx. 50g tin
Mealworms - Tenebrio molitor The mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) is one of the oldest commercially bred feeder animals. They are relatively easy to breed. For birds in small quantities also for reptiles The mealworm is actually the beetle larva of the meal beetle. It hatches from an egg and grows to a size of approx. 25 mm after moulting several times. Eventually the beetle larva pupates, from which a beetle emerges again. Mealworms are among the oldest commercially bred feeder animals. They are relatively easy to breed and are produced in large quantities. Mealworms are actually pests which are mainly known from grain mills, as the larvae prefer to feed on flour or its waste products. As it is not possible to use insecticides in mills, an infestation is difficult to control. Mealworms are a classic food for soft-feeding birds. Hundreds of tons of these beetle larvae are produced throughout Europe every year for this purpose. A bird's stomach is well adapted to this type of food. A mealworm consists largely of a hard, chitinous shell and, due to its fairly simple diet, contains few nutrients. The stomach of a reptile, on the other hand, is not well adapted to these conditions. If too many or only mealworms are fed to reptiles, deficiency symptoms or obesity can occur. You can also see from the animals' faeces that mealworms are only poorly digested. Feeding mealworms with vegetables or fruit before feeding only has the effect of a certain vitaminization, which could also be achieved by dusting the beetle larvae with a vitamin preparation. The high fat content of mealworms is another reason why the larvae should only be given to reptiles as supplementary food. For many bird lovers, however, they represent the staple food of their favourites and this is mainly what they are bred for. At temperatures below 10 degrees C. the animals become motionless but are not dead. This can be utilised for storage. At temperatures of 6-8 degrees C. the animals can be stored for several weeks without food.Order by Sunday evening - delivery on ThursdayOrders received by Sunday evening will be sent by A-Post on Wednesday or Thursday. Please provide a recipient address where the parcel can be delivered. We accept no responsibility for parcels that are delivered late or collected late. Drosophila mite separator
Drosophila Mite Separator The Drosophila mite separator is a practical aid for the hygienic preparation of feeder insects. It reliably separates mites from Drosophila (food flies) before they are fed to reptiles, amphibians or other insectivores. This reduces the risk of mite transmission and supports clean feeding. Product features - at a glance - Effectively separates mites from Drosophila - Facilitates the hygienic preparation of feeding flies - Reduces the risk of mite transmission - Quick and easy to use - Suitable for daily feeding - Ideal for terrariums and breeding - Reusable and easy to clean The Drosophila mite separator was specially developed to separate mites from the Drosophila before feeding. Especially in terrariums and insect breeding, mites can multiply quickly and be unintentionally transferred to terrariums. (Food mites do not go to terrarium animals such as reptiles and amphibians) By using the mite separator, the food flies can be hygienically prepared before feeding. The Drosophila are separated, while mites remain in the container or are separated out. This contributes to cleaner feeding and the well-being of the animals. The mite separator is easy to use, quickly ready for use and is suitable for both hobby keepers and professional breeders. Zoo Roco tip Use the mite separator regularly, especially with freshly purchased or home-bred Drosophila. Clean the tool after use to prevent mites from accumulating again.

House flies - Musca domestica House flies (Musca domestica) are comparable to European house flies, but house flies cannot fly properly, instead they can only hop a few centimetres. unable to fly for reptiles and amphibians House flies are comparable to European house flies, but specimens with crippled wings have also been selectively bred, so that house flies also cannot fly properly but can generally only hop a few centimetres. However, this genetic defect is not dominant. This means that if the flies are mixed with flight-capable animals, the offspring are predominantly able to fly again. In this case, the flight-capable animals must be sorted out before further breeding can take place. House flies are offered either in breeding batches or in the form of washed-out pupae. Desert locust (Schistozerca gregaria)The desert locust (Schistozerca gregaria) is one of the largest commercially bred food animals. Females reach a total length with wings of over 75 mm in some cases. popular food animal for reptiles and amphibians larger than the migratory locust medium The desert locust is one of the largest commercially bred food animals. It is precisely this colouring that arouses the prey drive in many reptile species, which makes the desert locust particularly popular with many terrarium keepers.Unfortunately, the desert locust is not as productive as the migratory locust and rearing the animals takes up to 2/3 longer. On the other hand, it can be bred almost all year round, as it is not too demanding on special types of food. The desert locust is an excellent food insect because it can usually survive shipping without damage, even in extreme heat and cold, and can survive for up to 2 weeks after shipping without the addition of food.Desert locusts are generally accepted by all lizards. Experience has shown that they are particularly favoured by large lizards such as bearded dragons, water dragons, basilisks, varans, ruffed lizards etc.. Drosophila - fruit flies, large
Contents Food animals: 1/2 liter
Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) large Drosophila, also known as fruit flies, are the smallest flies that are commercially bred as food animals. flightless for amphibians, small reptiles and young spiders also for small ornamental birds Fruit flies are the smallest flies that are commercially bred as food animals. However, these flies were originally bred for genetic research, as the reproduction duration of the flies is very short. In order to handle the animals more easily, specimens with crippled wings were bred out. As a result, the flies have lost their ability to fly. Drosophilas are often fed to amphibians, small offspring of reptiles and young spiders, but also to small ornamental birds. Lysimachia Nummularia
Lysimachia Nummularia Lysimachia Nummularia is a second level aquarium plant that does well in emersed (above water) form. Easy to grow and tolerant of requirements.Difficult to grow: moderately demandingLight requirements: mediumCO₂ requirements: mediumOutgrown plant height: up to 60 cmGrowth: fastTemperature: 15-26 °Placement in aquarium: Second levelOrigin: EuropeCup diameter: 6 cmLysimachia Nummularia (Sedentary Lysimachia), is an aquatic plant that spreads easily on the bottom when it inhabits the banks of ponds and pools. It has a weakly branched structure. The roots grow in clumps or singly near the round, heart-shaped leaves. If well cared for and not pruned, it can bloom above the surface of the aquarium with yellow flowers. It grows quickly if you provide it with a loamy, sandy substrate along with good light and provide it with enough CO₂ gas fertilizer. Low temperatures don't bother her, but at higher temperatures her growth accelerates considerably, so she can be difficult to control. It prefers soft and slightly acidic water in the aquarium. It feels comfortable at a pH of 6-8. In order to have distinctive, heart-shaped leaves with an intense green color, it requires lots of nitrogen. A nitrogen deficiency will cause the plant to restrict its growth and not climb as much. It is therefore advisable to fertilize it regularly with nitrogenous products and to plant it in aquariums with lots of fish. The hedgehog tree generally grows vertically, without forming too many branches. It grows well in an aquarium with tropical fish, but also in cold biotopes of European waters or on the banks of ponds. Propagation is very simple: just cut the top shoot of the plant and plant it in the substrate, where it will take root. You will achieve the best decorative effect if you plant the plant in small groups of 15-20 specimens. If the shoots are not cut off when it reaches the water table, the plant will continue to grow into an emerse form. Its green-yellow color stands out well against other plants in the aquarium. Lysimachia does well in a hydroponic filter, from which it grows out and forms a green waterfall of leaves that flows into the aquarium. It can also be used in humid terrariums, paludariums or gardens. In a well-lit and regularly sprayed "garden in a jar", it also pleases our eyes with its delicate appearance and rich green color.Planting: The plant must be removed from the cup and thoroughly rinsed from the gel under running water. This is best done by placing the plant in a container of lukewarm water. Most of the gel will then fall off by itself. Divide the contents of the cup into 3-4 cm lumps and then place them in the substrate..
