Water fleas in the broader sense is a colloquial name for a number of small crustaceans from various families and genera (Daphnia, Bosmina, Cyclops, Simocephalus and others) of crustaceans belonging to the freshwater zooplankton. The name refers to the locomotion of the animals in the water. By intermittently rowing with their antennae, the impression of a flea-like hopping is created.

The species Daphnia pulex is referred to as a water flea in the narrower sense, and the species Daphnia magna is referred to as a giant water flea; the latter, especially the form Daphnia magna straus, is used for water quality tests.

Water fleas reproduce mostly asexually, in this case by parthenogenesis. This means that the female adult (adult) animals produce eggs whose genetic material is an identical copy of the mother's genetic material; one could also speak of cloning. Male eggs are formed in stressful situations, such as severe temperature changes, food or oxygen shortages, the presence of toxic substances, or a large density of predators. The resulting males reproduce sexually with the females, and recombination of genetic material occurs, resulting in more diversity, which has advantages for the survival of the species.

Water fleas are filter feeders that feed mainly on algae and are a high fiber food.
