Water fleas in the broader sense is a colloquial term for a series of small crustaceans from various families and genera (Daphnia, Bosmina, Cyclops, Simocephalus and others) of crustaceans that belong to the zooplankton of fresh water. The name refers to the way the animals move through the water. By intermittently rowing with their antennae, the impression of a flea-like hopping is created.

The species Daphnia pulex is called water flea in the narrower sense and the species Daphnia magna is called giant water flea, the latter, especially the form Daphnia magna straus, is used for water quality tests.
