Die Ernährung wild lebender Landschildkröten richtet sich immer nach den natürlichen Gegebenheiten der Vegetation. In ihren ursprünglichen Lebensräumen ist die eigentliche Vegetationszeit meist auf eine kurze Zeit beschränkt, die in der Zeit vom Hochsommer bis in den Herbst von Trockenheit und Hitze abgelöst wird. Im Frühjahr ist der Gehalt an Rohfaser in den Pflanzen relativ niedrig und der Eiweißgehalt hoch. Im Laufe des Sommers „altern“ die Kräuter und Gräser. Der Rohfasergehalt nimmt demnach im Hochsommer zu, wohingegen der Eiweißgehalt dann stark absinkt.
Um den Bedürfnissen des Organismus gerecht zu werden, sollte eine angepasste Zusammensetzung der Fütterung im jahreszeitlichen Ablauf vorliegen.

Babyschildkröten haben in der Fütterung ähnliche Ansprüche wie ausgewachsene Schildkröten. Sie benötigen vor allem Kräuter und Gräser artenreicher und gleichzeitig magerer Wiesen. Auch wenn es schwer fällt, sollte auf eine zurückhaltende, nach menschlichen Maßstäben karge Fütterung, Wert gelegt werden. Nur so kann beim Schildkrötennachwuchs ein angemessenes, langsames Wachstum erreicht und gesundheitliche Folgeschäden vermieden werden.
