Das Meerschweinchen
Die ursprüngliche Heimat der Meerschweinchen ist Südamerika, wo sie in Felsenhöhlen leben. Den Inkas dienten sie als Fleischlieferant. Holländische Kaufleute brachten sie nach Europa übers Meer. Weil ihr Quieken sie an Schweinchen erinnerte, nannten sie die kleinen Tiere Meerschweinchen.
Haltung:
Meerschweinchen sind Rudeltiere. Um sich wirklich wohl zu fühlen brauchen sie Gesellschaft. Deshalb sollte man niemals nur ein einzelnes Tier halten. Am besten vertragen sich Weibchen, oder kastrierte Männchen mit Weibchen. Zwei Böcke können nur bei Frühkastration zusammen gehalten werden. Ein gemischtes Paar sorgt für ständigen Nachwuchs.Damit sich die Bewohner wohl fühlen, kann ein Meerschweinchen Heim nie gross genug sein. Die Käfiggrösse für zwei Tiere sollte 140x60cm nicht unterschreiten. Es gibt aber auch sehr schöne Gehege mit der Grösse von 150x75cm.Der Käfig sollte mit Unterschlupfmöglichkeiten ausgestattet sein, damit sich die Tiere jederzeit zurückziehen können. Dies sollte man respektieren und die Tiere nicht aus dem Schlaf reissen und beliebig herausnehmen. Je mehr zusätzliche Etagen und Versteckhöhlen das Heim enthält, desto wohler fühlen sich seine Bewohner.

Mit dem Zusatzfutter kann man den Meerschweinchen Abwechslung in ihren Menüplan bringen.Über Frischkost, wie Obst, Karotten oder Löwenzahn freut sich das Meerschweinchen besonders. Achten sie darauf, dass das Frischfutter ungespritzt ist. Das Grünzeug sollte immer frisch, aber nie nass sein. Denn Meerschweinchen bekommen leicht Durchfall.Meerschweinchen haben einen hohen Bedarf an Vitamin C. Deshalb sollte dem Trinkwasser täglich Vitamintropfen beigegeben werden.Den Meerschweinchen sollte täglich frisches Wasser zur Verfügung stehen.
