The species name “nana” means: dwarf. However, the plant only exhibits this growth behaviour in its natural habitat in Australia. In our aquaria, the plants can reach lengths of 30-70 cm. This very narrow-leaved species is therefore more suitable for the background. Cultivation and care are very simple, but here too it is important to control the growth of the runners. CO2-applications additionally promote the growth of all Vallisnerias.

The variegated calamus is ideal for visually calming the transition between the water surface and the garden: It looks natural, but remains compact and controllable. This plant is a particularly harmonious choice in places where you want clean lines - for example along pond edges, in shallow bays or in small shoreline areas.The ideal place is in the shore to shallow water zone. The specified planting depth of 0 to -15 cm allows for flexible use: directly on the moist edge or standing slightly in the water. Thanks to its height of approx. 20 to 30 cm, the calamus remains pleasantly low so that it does not obstruct the view of the water surface. At the same time, it provides structure between higher-growing bank plants and lower ground cover plants.The variegated calamus is particularly valuable in pond design because it combines well with many other pond and marsh plants. It is suitable for both naturalistic planting schemes and more modern pond designs that emphasise clear shapes and calm areas.
