Rodentia 91 - Dwarf hamsters as pets
Viscachas: South American hare mice
Dwarf hamsters as pets
In the shadow of the popular golden hamster, its smaller relatives have quietly conquered the enclosures and terrariums of many rodent lovers. From the genus of short-tailed dwarf hamsters (Phodopus), the Campbell dwarf hamster (P. campbelli), the Dzungarian dwarf hamster (P. sungorus) and the Roborowski dwarf hamster (P. roborovskii) are regularly kept and bred by enthusiasts. Occasionally, the Chinese striped hamster (Cricetulus griseus), which belongs to the grey dwarf hamster genus (Cricetulus), is also available in pet shops or from private breeders. Despite their small size, dwarf hamsters in human hands need one thing above all: plenty of space! If this is available, the agile rodents are ideal pets for working people who want to enjoy the behaviour of their pets in the evenings and want to keep the maintenance effort manageable. In the cover story of our next issue, you can read about what goes on in the dwarf hamster nursery and what these pretty rodents need in terms of accommodation, feeding and care.
