Only a male of the same species will be fought to the death - hence the name! The beautiful, long-finned fighting fish in our pet stores are descended from the species Betta splendens, which is often used for fish fights in Asia. Fighting fish and many other labyrinth fish (gouramis, gourami & macropods) live in both stagnant and flowing waters. They are lurking hunters that shoot out quickly with their upper mouth to eat an insect that has landed on the surface of the water, for example. They do not eat any aquarium plants and do not need much space. If you want to keep females as well as males, you should definitely add several females. A single female would be too crowded. The best-known fighting fish species build foam nests on the surface of the water, which are guarded by the male. Other fighting fish species are mouthbrooders, which incubate their eggs in their mouths until the young hatch and are large enough to stand on their own legs or fins. The water values are not really decisive for fighting fish. Although they prefer soft water and pH values between 6.5 and 7.5, they can also cope with other values.
