Cyclops is one of the most common small crustaceans in our native waters and belongs to the group of copepods. The name Cyclops is derived from the cyclops in Greek mythology, as the animal only has one large eye.

Features
The cyclops is 0.5 - 5 mm long. It is clearly divided into two body sections. The broad oval front section consists of the head and the first five thoracic segments. The rear section is much slimmer. It consists of the narrow sixth thoracic and four legless abdominal segments and has two abdominal appendages at the end. The long first antennae of the smaller male are remodelled into grasping organs with which the female is held during mating. The female attaches the eggs to her body in two sacs after laying them.

Habitat
Cyclops is found worldwide in fresh water, more rarely in brackish water. It lives in the shore zones of plant-rich standing and slightly flowing waters. Around 20 species are found in the stagnant waters of Central Europe.
