Aquarium - What is an aquarium?
An aquarium is a container filled with water in which aquatic plants and animals are kept and displayed.
The most important features of an aquarium are:
- It has at least one transparent side, typically made of glass or acrylic, to allow observation of the occupants.
- It serves as an artificial habitat (vivarium) for aquatic organisms such as fish, invertebrates, amphibians, aquatic plants and sometimes aquatic reptiles such as turtles.
- Aquariums come in various sizes - from small glass containers with a volume of a few litres to huge public aquariums with thousands of litres. They are used both as a hobby at home and on a larger scale in public facilities such as zoos.
- A typical home aquarium is equipped with specialised equipment, including filter systems, artificial lighting, air pumps and heaters or coolers.
- The term "aquarium" was coined by the English naturalist Philip Henry Gosse and is made up of the Latin word "aqua" (water) and the suffix "-arium" (place for something).
- In addition to keeping animals, aquariums also serve as a decorative element in living spaces.
The modern concept of the aquarium was developed in the middle of the 19th century and has since become a popular way of keeping animals and observing nature.
Aquarium furniture
Aquarium furniture are specially designed base cabinets or cupboards that
serve as a stand and storage place for aquariums. They fulfil
several important functions:
Stability: Aquarium furniture is robustly built to safely carry the considerable weight of a water-filled aquarium.
Storage space: They provide space for aquarium equipment such as filters, heaters and CO2 systems as well as care products and food.
Aesthetics: Modern aquarium furniture is available in various designs and integrates harmoniously with interior design.
Functionality: Many models have practical features such as cable guides or easily accessible maintenance flaps.
Protection: They protect the floor from possible water damage and prevent heat loss.
When
choosing, you should pay attention to quality, load capacity and fit for the
aquarium. A high-quality aquarium cabinet is a worthwhile
investment for the safety and longevity of your underwater world.
Aquaristics - An overarching term for the entire hobby
Aquaristics provides all the products you need to create an aquarium biotope. From the aquarium to equipment such as filters and heaters, but also all the furnishings for a freshwater or saltwater aquarium are summarised in this category.
Aquaristics is an exciting hobby for young and old. An underwater world enriches any living space and watching the fish has a calming effect.
Aquaristics is divided into marine and freshwater aquaristics. The different salt content distinguishes these two bodies of water. Saltwater has a salt content of over 4%; that is, 4 kilograms of sea salt per 120 litres of water. Fresh water refers to bodies of water that contain a maximum of 0.1% dissolved salts. In the zones where a river flows into the sea, mixed water occurs – this is called brackish water and the salt content varies. Due to the ebb and flow of the tide, the salt content is constantly mixed anew. Aquarium brands
