Notes

Easy to care for and grows well.

Another variety of the C. wendtii group is our C421, a medium-sized, brown water calyx that grows very well and is easy to care for. Its above-water leaves are rust-brown, in the submerged stage the leaves are chocolate brown. Planting tip: Water calyxes remain particularly small and compact when grown in a clay pot. This is pressed directly into the substrate. The small volume in the root area keeps the plants smaller - creating a bonsai effect.

Mature clumps, some with more than 50 leaves, are a striking feature. However, the substrate must be at least 10 cm deep for the root system to develop properly. Combined with Helanthium species (dwarf Echinodorus), beautiful South American underwater landscapes can be created.

The plant produces narrow and pure green leaves. With a growth height of 10 - 20 cm, it is well suited for the foreground. It grows quite slowly, so the care requirements are low. The plants are cut approx. 2 - 3 cm above the substrate.

The stems are strongly compressed and the leaves sit close together in a compact form. Plants cultivated above water have deep dark green leaves, in the aquarium they are bright light green. It grows slowly, which is why it requires significantly less care than other Hygrophila species. It is well suited to the foreground. Its leaf shape makes it a nice change from other foreground plants.

As with many Echinodorus varieties, emersed and submerged leaves differ enormously. The 'Little Bear' is bright green in the greenhouse and produces its first red submerged leaves after just a few days in the aquarium. Always a fascinating spectacle!

At first glance, you think of a rosette plant, but it is actually a strongly compressed stem plant. If a few basic cultivation conditions are met, Pogostemon helferi forms beautiful plant cushions: good to intensive lighting, temperatures around 25 °C, medium-hard water. Under these conditions, its leaf colour is rich green. Pogostemon helferi can be planted in gravel as well as attached to stones or roots.
