Product information "Dwarf rush (18cm) - Juncus ensifolius"

Juncus ensifolius - dwarf rush for the garden pond

The dwarf rush is a compact, grass-like pond edge plant that gives banks and shallow water zones a clean visual structure. At 30-40 cm tall, it is ideal for the edge without obscuring the view of the water. It flowers from June to August (VI-VIII) and is hardy in zones 1-2.

  • Flowering period: VI-VIII (June to August)
  • Flower colour: rust red
  • Winter hardiness: Zone 1 - 2
  • Pot: approx. 18 cm

Plant specifications:

  • They give the pond edge a calm, natural structure and neatly fill gaps between stones or plant baskets.
  • The planting depth of 0 to -15 cm allows the dwarf rush to be placed flexibly in marginal and shallow water zones.
  • Thanks to zone 1-2, it is suitable for perennial, low-maintenance pond planting.

Technical data:

  • Botanical name: Juncus ensifolius
  • German name: Dwarf rush
  • Planting depth: up to -15 cm
  • Flowering time: VI-VII
  • Winter hardiness: Zone 1/2
  • Pot: approx. 18 cm

With Juncus ensifolius (dwarf rush), you can choose a plant for your garden pond that impresses with its clear, grass-like structure. Such "calming elements" are particularly important around ponds: they bring order to the bank planting, make transitions look more natural and prevent the edge area from appearing visually restless.

Thanks to its compact height of approx. 30 to 40 cm, the dwarf rush is ideal for the foreground to midground - where you want structure but want the water surface to remain visible. The dwarf rush can be used very flexibly as it is suitable for a planting depth of 0 to -15 cm. This makes it perfect for the bank and shallow water zone: directly in moist marginal soil or standing slightly in the water.

It looks particularly attractive when planted in small groups or as a recurring element along the edge of the pond. This creates a natural rhythm that visually "captures" the pond. The flowering period is from June to August (VI-VIII). Even if the flowers are often not the centre of attention with rushes, the seasonal indication gives you a good orientation for the development over the summer.

Due to its hardiness (zone 1-2), Juncus ensifolius is suitable for perennial pond installations and is an easy-care addition to naturalised, permanent shoreline areas. For a clean, controllable pond design, we recommend using it in a plant basket, depending on the design. This ensures that the plant remains stable in the desired position and you can easily move or divide it if necessary.

Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.

Zoo Roco tip: Use the dwarf rush as a "framing plant": place it along the edge of the pond at a depth of 0 to -15 cm to make transitions between stones, the edge of the liner and higher-growing shore plants appear calmer. The line remains particularly clean and easy to maintain in plant baskets.

The variegated calamus is ideal for visually calming the transition between the water surface and the garden: It looks natural, but remains compact and controllable. This plant is a particularly harmonious choice in places where you want clean lines - for example along pond edges, in shallow bays or in small shoreline areas. The ideal place is in the shore to shallow water zone. The specified planting depth of 0 to -15 cm allows for flexible use: directly on the moist edge or standing slightly in the water. Thanks to its height of approx. 20 to 30 cm, the calamus remains pleasantly low so that it does not obstruct the view of the water surface. At the same time, it provides structure between higher-growing bank plants and lower ground cover plants. The variegated calamus is particularly valuable in pond design because it combines well with many other pond and marsh plants. It is suitable for both naturalistic planting schemes and more modern pond designs that emphasise clear shapes and calm areas. Thanks to its hardiness zone 1-2, it is also suitable for perennial pond edge planting. The plant is supplied in a pot (approx. 10 cm). For easy handling around the pond, we recommend using it in a plant basket - depending on the structure - so that the location remains stable and you can easily move the plant if necessary.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events (e.g. brown leaves or broken shoots). We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: Place the variegated calamus in the most beautiful spot where you walk past it every day: It looks particularly elegant when planted in small groups and its fine leaves are reflected in the water. For more control, we recommend using a planting basket - this will keep the edges neat and you can easily divide or reposition the plant later.

Dwarf water lily - Nymphaea pygmaea rubra
Dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ red (18cm)The dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ brings an elegant splash of colour to the water’s surface with its red flowers. Thanks to its compact form, it is particularly suitable for smaller garden ponds as well as mini ponds and bowls. Ideal if you want a water lily that doesn’t take up too much space.Dwarf-form water lily – suitable for small water areasFlower colour: redGrowth: compact, for a controlled leaf areaArea of application: Garden pond, mini pond, tub/bowlTechnical dataBotanical name: Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’English name: Dwarf water lilyFlower colour: redPlanting depth: -10 to -40cmFlowering period: June to September Pot size: approx. 18 cmWith the dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ you bring the typical water lily atmosphere into the garden – even if your pond is rather small or you want to plant in a mini pond or tub. Dwarf water lilies are designed to unfold a harmonious effect in a limited space: Floating leaves on the surface and an attractive blossom, without the water area being quickly completely covered. The ‘Rubra’ variety creates an elegant, easily visible splash of colour with its red flowers.Especially with smaller garden ponds, balanced planting is crucial. Water lilies that grow too vigorously can quickly dominate the surface and “close” the water effect. In comparison, a dwarf water lily remains more compact and is therefore a good choice if you want a calm, well-kept look and nevertheless do not want to do without the classic water lily eye-catcher. ‘Rubra’ is particularly effective when positioned so that you have a good view of the flowers from your seat or terrace – as the red shades clearly stand out against the water and greenery. For establishing, stable placement is important, ideally in a planting basket or a suitable container. This way the rhizome lies undisturbed, and you can adjust the position if necessary. If you are looking for a compact water lily with a strong colour, Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ is a fitting choice for a natural yet controlled pond design.Note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it may occur that plants are slightly damaged during postal delivery or by other unforeseen events. This includes both brown leaves and bent branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Put dwarf water lilies in a planting basket so you can easily adjust their position. If the plant is still small at first, start out higher (shallower) and lower them later – this often encourages quicker growth and flowering.

Japanese Iris purple (18cm) - Iris kaempferi
Iris kaempferi - Japanese iris purple for pond edgeThe Japanese iris brings an elegant, calm colour effect to the garden pond with its purple flowers. It flowers from May to July (V-VII) and is hardy in zones 1-2.Flowering time: V-VII (May to July)Flower colour: purpleWinter hardiness: Zone 1, 2Pot: approx. 18 cmPlant specifications:They add an elegant purple colour accent to the edge of the pond and visibly enhance the shoreline. Thanks to its planting depth of 0 to -15 cm, Japanese iris is perfect for damp borders and very shallow areas. Zone 1-2 makes it suitable for perennial pond edge planting in many regions.Technical data:Botanical name: Iris kaempferiGerman name: Japanese IrisPlanting depth: 0 to -15 cmFlowering time: V-VII (May to July)Winter hardiness: Zone 1/2Pot: approx. 18 cmWith Iris kaempferi (Japanese iris), you can create a particularly stylish garden pond: the purple flowers look elegant and create a clear accent that contrasts beautifully with green plants along the banks. The edges of ponds in particular often have areas that are evenly moist and are ideal for iris species. Japanese iris is an attractive choice here if you are looking for a plant that provides structure and at the same time creates a seasonal highlight with its flowers. The Japanese iris reaches a height of approx. 60 to 80 cm. This makes it perfect for the centre to background of a pond edge planting: low ground cover or shallow water plants in front, with the iris behind as a "frame" that gives depth to the pond edge. The flowering period from May to July (V-VII) ensures that your pond looks particularly attractive in the early to middle gardening season. Planted in small groups, it creates a calm, two-dimensional effect; planted individually, it becomes a focal point. The recommended planting depth of 0 to -15 cm makes Iris kaempferi ideal for damp border areas. It can be planted directly in moist bank soil or - depending on the pond structure - positioned in a very shallow area. A planting basket is often practical for a clean, controllable pond edge because the plant is stable and can be repositioned if necessary. Thanks to its hardiness zone 1-2, Japanese iris is suitable for perennial ponds and is a good addition if you want to create a permanent shoreline with clear flower accents.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: Place the Japanese iris so that it is clearly visible from your favourite viewing angle - purple flowers look particularly beautiful when they are slightly reflected in the water. Place them at a depth of 0 to -15 cm or in permanently moist soil and combine with low ground cover plants at the front to show the iris to its best advantage.

Creeping Mazus blue (18cm) - Mazus reptans
Creeping Mazus for the garden pond – Mazus reptans blueMazus reptans blue is a low-growing ground cover that quickly greens the damp edge areas around the garden pond. The white flowers appear from April to September (IV–IX) and provide a neat, fresh impression for a long time. Thanks to zone 1–2, the plant is suitable for perennial plantings.Flowering period: IV–IX (April to September)Flower colour: blueWinter hardiness: Zone 1 - 2Pot: approx. 18 cmPlant specificationsThey quickly close gaps at the edge of the pond and create a natural, soft transition between water and garden. The long flowering period IV–IX keeps the border attractive for many months. The low, creeping growth looks neat and helps to reduce open soil in damp areas.Technical data:Botanical name: Mazus reptans (blue)German name: Creeping MazusHeight: 10 - 15 cmPlanting depth: Bank zoneFlowering period: VI–IXWinter hardiness zone: Zone 1/2 With Mazus reptans blue you get a reliable ground cover for damp locations – ideal for landscaping around the garden pond. Especially at the banks, in the marsh zone or along streams, small gaps often occur where open soil remains visible. Here, creeping Mazus provides a natural finish: it grows flat, visually connects different planting areas and makes the transition from water to garden appear much softer.A particular advantage is the long flowering period from April to September (IV–IX). In this way, Mazus reptans brings bright accents to the border planting for many months and at the same time looks neat, without you having to constantly replant or touch up. The white flowers fit into virtually any pond design – whether naturalistic or more modern – and can be easily combined with taller waterside plants. This makes Mazus particularly suitable as a "carpet" in the foreground, while structure-giving pond plants complete the picture behind it.For placement at the garden pond we recommend a location that stays evenly damp. Plant the Mazus where you want a dense finish – for example at the pond edge, between stones or at the edge of stepping stones. This not only keeps the bank zone visually calmer, it also appears more stable and less "torn up". As there is no information on height, planting depth and pot size, these points remain neutral; in practice, the main thing is a damp, suitable location at the edge.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive with you healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by postal delivery or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as bent branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Plant Mazus reptans white at the pond edge where you want to break up "hard edges" – e.g. between stones or along the liner edge. If the location becomes temporarily drier in summer, a thin layer of fine gravel or mulch at the edge will help to keep the soil moist for longer.

As the garden comes back to life after winter, it provides a radiant focal point by the water with its yellow flowers from March to May (III–V). Especially at the pond edge, this is particularly valuable: many marginal plants only really start to grow strongly later on – the marsh marigold, on the other hand, brings early colour and appears natural and harmonious. With a growth height of approx. 30 to 40 cm the plant is ideal for the foreground to midground. It fits beautifully on pond margins, in damp border beds or areas that are permanently fresh to wet. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes it perfect for the bank and shallow water edge zone: directly in moist soil at the edge or standing slightly in water. Caltha palustris looks particularly attractive when set in small groups – this creates a calm, natural area that visually softens the pond edge.Delivery in a 9-cm pot makes planting easier. If you want a very clear pond margin or want to keep the position flexible, a planting basket is a practical solution: this keeps the marsh marigold stable in the desired place and allows it to be easily moved if necessary. Thanks to winter hardiness zone 1–2, Caltha palustris is suitable for permanently designed pond installations in many regions and is an uncomplicated choice for easy-care, natural pond edge planting.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the utmost care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the postal service or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken stems. We do not accept any liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Plant the marsh marigold where you often walk past in spring – it’s a perfect starting point for the pond season. If your water level fluctuates greatly in spring, place the plant in the planting basket at 0 to –15 cm so it stays stable and takes root reliably.

It is suitable for a planting depth of 0 to –15 cm, with a flowering period from June to August (VI–VIII)..Flowering period: VI–VIII (June to August)Height: approx. 60–80 cmPlanting depth: 0 to –15 cmPot size: approx. 9cmProduct specifications:They provide lasting splashes of colour at the pond edge via their foliage – attractive even outside the flowering season. Thanks to a planting depth of 0 to –15 cm, ribbon grass fits perfectly into damp banks and marginal shallow-water areas. With zone 1, the plant is winter-hardy and suitable for perennial pond bank designs.Technical data:Botanical name: Phalaris arundinacea ‘Picta’Common name: Colourful ribbon grass (also: Reed canary grass ‘Picta’)Height (cm): 60 / 80 cmPlanting depth: 0 / –15 cmFlowering period: VI–VIIIWinter hardiness zone: Zone 1Pot size: 9 cmWith Phalaris arundinacea ‘Picta’, you are choosing a ribbon grass that impresses at the garden pond above all with its striped leaf markings. Around ponds, plants are required that are not only attractive during short blooming periods but structure the border zone throughout the whole season. This is exactly where ‘Picta’ comes into its own: The light, colourful-looking foliage brings freshness to the bank zone and forms a beautiful contrast to darker green plants, stones or the water surface. With a height of approx. 60 to 80 cm, ribbon grass is suitable for the middle to background area of pond edge planting. It “frames” the bank line without completely taking away the view into the water, and brings a calm, tidy effect. Phalaris ‘Picta’ appears particularly harmonious when planted in small groups or placed as a recurring element along a pond edge. This creates a natural rhythm that embeds the pond harmoniously. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes the plant ideal for the damp bank zone and very shallow areas. Plant it directly in damp marginal soil or place it in the shallow-water border area – depending on the pond layout. Delivered in a 9-cm pot, ribbon grass can easily be integrated into planting plans, especially if you want to plant several specimens for an even edge effect. For a particularly neat pond edge, a plant basket can be useful to ensure the plant stays stable and so you can simply adjust its position as required. With winter hardiness zone 1, Phalaris ‘Picta’ is suitable for perennial pond installations and is a good choice if you want to combine structure with a bright foliage effect at your garden pond.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the utmost care, it is possible that plants may be slightly damaged by postal delivery or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as bent stems. No liability is accepted for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Use Phalaris ‘Picta’ to visually brighten dark corners at the pond edge – for example, next to stones or in front of evergreen plants. If you wish to keep a clear shape, plant the ribbon grass in a plant basket (0 to –15 cm) and cut it back to ground level in spring so that it sends up fresh shoots again.

When the garden comes back to life after winter, it ensures a striking splash of colour by the water with its yellow flowers from March to May (III–V). It fits perfectly at pond edges, in damp border beds or in areas that are permanently moist to wet. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes it perfect for the bank and shallow water edge zone: directly in damp soil at the edge or standing slightly in water. Marsh marigold looks especially beautiful when you plant it in small groups – this creates a calm, natural area that visually softens the pond edge. The delivery in a 18-cm pot makes it easier to plant and gives the plant a good root volume from the start. If you want a very clear pond edge or want to keep the position flexible, a planting basket is a practical solution: this keeps the marsh marigold stable in the desired spot and can be easily moved if necessary. Thanks to winter hardiness zone 1–2, Caltha palustris is suitable for permanent pond installations in many regions and is an uncomplicated choice for a low-maintenance, natural pond edge planting.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Especially around ponds, the start of the season is crucial: While many marginal plants are still developing in spring, this primrose already brings colour from March to May (III–V). This makes the pond edge look well-tended and lively early on – ideal if you want your garden pond to be a focal point right from the start of the season. The plant remains pleasantly compact at around 20 to 30 cm in height. This makes it excellent for the foreground of pondside planting, for damp border beds or as a colourful accent between stones and stepping stones. ‘Alba’ looks particularly harmonious when you plant several in small groups: This creates a calm, natural effect and emphasises the shoreline without visually enclosing the water’s surface. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm gives you flexibility in placement. In practice, the Japanese primrose is ideal in damp bank soil or very shallow marginal areas where the soil remains consistently fresh. The 9 cm pot is perfect if you want to plant several specimens to achieve a visible effect quickly. With fluctuating water levels, a small planting basket can be useful to keep the plant stable and the site tidy. Thanks to Zone 1, Primula japonica ‘Alba’ is winter-hardy and is therefore well suited to perennial pond edge designs. A fitting choice if you want to make your pond edge attractive not only in summer but as early as spring.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Plant ‘Alba’ where you often pass by in spring – it is ideal for enlivening the pond edge early.

Creeping Mazus blue (9cm) - Mazus reptans
Creeping Mazus for the garden pond - Mazus reptans blueMazus reptans blue is a low-growing ground cover that quickly green up damp areas around the edge of a garden pond. The white flowers appear from April to September (IV-IX) and provide a neat, fresh look for a long time. Thanks to zone 1-2, the plant is suitable for perennial planting.Flowering time: IV-IX (April to September)Flower colour: blueWinter hardiness: Zone 1 - 2Pot: approx. 9 cmPlant specificationsThey quickly close gaps at the edge of the pond and create a natural, soft transition between the water and the garden. The long flowering period IV-IX keeps the border attractive for many months. The low, creeping growth looks neat and helps to reduce open soil in moist areas.Technical data:Botanical name: Mazus reptans (blue)German name: Creeping MazusHeight: 10 - 15 cmPlanting depth: Bank zoneFlowering time: VI-IXWinter hardiness: Zone 1/2 Mazus reptans blue is a reliable ground cover for moist locations - ideal for landscaping around the garden pond. Small gaps often appear along the edges of banks, in the swamp zone or along streams where open soil remains visible. Here, creeping Mazus provides a natural finish: it grows flat, visually connects different planting areas and makes the transition from water to garden appear much softer.A particular advantage is the long flowering period from April to September (IV-IX). This means that Mazus reptans brings bright accents to the border for many months and at the same time looks well-groomed without you having to constantly replant or mend. The white flowers go well with practically any pond design - whether natural or more modern - and can be combined well with taller waterside plants. This makes the Mazus particularly suitable as a "carpet" in the foreground, while structure-giving pond plants round off the picture behind it.For placement by the garden pond, we recommend a location that remains evenly moist. Place the Mazus where you want a dense border - for example at the edge of the pond, between stones or at the edge of stepping stones. This not only keeps the bank zone visually calmer, it also looks more stable and less "torn up". As there is no information on height, planting depth and pot size, these points remain neutral; in practice, a moist, suitable location at the edge is particularly important.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, plants may be slightly damaged by post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: Plant Mazus reptans white at the edge of the pond where you want to break up "hard edges" - e.g. between stones or along the edge of the liner. If the location becomes drier at times in summer, a thin layer of fine gravel or mulch at the edge will help to keep the soil moist for longer.

It brings lightness to the edge, where a clear transition between water plants and garden beds is often required. At a growth height of approx. 30 to 50 cm, the plant remains pleasantly compact and thus fits perfectly into the foreground to midground of the bank planting. By the pond, Achillea ptarmica is especially harmonious when planted in small groups: The white flowers create clear, friendly accents and can be very well combined with typical pond edge plants and ornamental grasses. The flowering period from June to July is ideal for visibly enlivening the border zone in early summer – precisely when many pond plantings are taking shape and the garden is being used more again. For use at the garden pond, the indication 0 to –15 cm is a good reference: place the perennial in the bank or border zone, where the soil remains evenly moist.Depending on the pond setup, this may mean standing directly at the edge in moist soil or being used in a planting basket in a very shallow area. It is important that the location does not dry out permanently so that the plant remains vital and develops stably. Achillea ptarmica is supplied in a P9 pot (approx. 9–10 cm). Thanks to winter hardiness zone 1–2 it is suitable for many locations and is an appropriate choice for long-lasting, easy-care pond edge planting.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the utmost care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by postal shipping or other unforeseen events (e.g. brown leaves or broken shoots). We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Plant Achillea ptarmica in small groups (e.g. 3–5 plants), so that the white flowers in the bed appear calm and "flat". After flowering, light pruning often encourages neat new growth.

It is ideal if you want to create a natural, gentle transition between the water surface and the garden. The marsh forget-me-not really comes into its own in damp areas where many bedding plants struggle: It looks light, friendly and blends harmoniously into mixed pond edge plantings. One major advantage is the long flowering period from May to August (V-VIII). This means that the edge zone remains lively and visually attractive for months. With a height of approx. 20 to 40 cm, the plant is particularly suitable for the foreground at the edge of the pond or as a filling element between stones, stepping stones and other shore plants. Planted in small groups, it creates a calm, flat effect that quickly looks natural and reliably closes gaps. Myosotis palustris is particularly interesting for pond design if you want a planting that is not too tall and does not obscure the view of the water. Place the plant in evenly moist soil at the edge or in the swamp zone - there it can establish itself well. The pot (approx. 18 cm) provides a solid starting volume and makes it easier to place in the desired location. If you prefer a clear edge to the pond, a plant basket can be useful to keep the plant where it will look best. Thanks to its hardiness zone 1-2, the marsh forget-me-not is suitable for permanent garden ponds and is an uncomplicated addition to near-natural bank plantings.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open bodies of water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: For a particularly natural look, place the marsh forget-me-not in small groups along the shoreline. If you are unsure how wet the location should be: place the plant on the wet edge first (not too deep in the water) - this makes it easy to find the perfect area by the garden pond.
