Product information "Dwarf water lily - Nymphaea pygmaea rubra"

Dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ red (18cm)

The dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ brings an elegant splash of colour to the water’s surface with its red flowers. Thanks to its compact form, it is particularly suitable for smaller garden ponds as well as mini ponds and bowls. Ideal if you want a water lily that doesn’t take up too much space.

  • Dwarf-form water lily – suitable for small water areas
  • Flower colour: red
  • Growth: compact, for a controlled leaf area
  • Area of application: Garden pond, mini pond, tub/bowl

Technical data

  • Botanical name: Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’
  • English name: Dwarf water lily
  • Flower colour: red
  • Planting depth: -10 to -40cm
  • Flowering period: June to September
  • Pot size: approx. 18 cm

With the dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ you bring the typical water lily atmosphere into the garden – even if your pond is rather small or you want to plant in a mini pond or tub. Dwarf water lilies are designed to unfold a harmonious effect in a limited space: Floating leaves on the surface and an attractive blossom, without the water area being quickly completely covered. The ‘Rubra’ variety creates an elegant, easily visible splash of colour with its red flowers.

Especially with smaller garden ponds, balanced planting is crucial. Water lilies that grow too vigorously can quickly dominate the surface and “close” the water effect. In comparison, a dwarf water lily remains more compact and is therefore a good choice if you want a calm, well-kept look and nevertheless do not want to do without the classic water lily eye-catcher. ‘Rubra’ is particularly effective when positioned so that you have a good view of the flowers from your seat or terrace – as the red shades clearly stand out against the water and greenery.

For establishing, stable placement is important, ideally in a planting basket or a suitable container. This way the rhizome lies undisturbed, and you can adjust the position if necessary.

If you are looking for a compact water lily with a strong colour, Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ is a fitting choice for a natural yet controlled pond design.

Note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it may occur that plants are slightly damaged during postal delivery or by other unforeseen events. This includes both brown leaves and bent branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.

Zoo-Roco tip: Put dwarf water lilies in a planting basket so you can easily adjust their position. If the plant is still small at first, start out higher (shallower) and lower them later – this often encourages quicker growth and flowering.

Lobelia cardinalis
Lobelia cardinalis Lobelia Cardinalis is a green plant, recommended for the second level of the aquarium and for the paludarium. It looks great in a group and likes to grow above the water surface.Difficulty of growing: easyLight requirements: mediumCO₂ requirements: lowAdult plant height: up to 30 cmGrowth: mediumTemperature: 15-28°CPlacement in aquarium: second levelOrigin: North AmericaShell diameter 6 cmLobelia Cardinalis or Cardinal's Strophica is a plant native to North America. In the wild, it is found in wetlands and along riverbanks. It is distributed from the Gulf of Mexico through the eastern states of the United States to southern Canada. It grows in the ground and has a well-developed root system. The feathery stems can develop auxiliary roots in leafless areas. Its distinctive ornamental feature is the light green, oval leaves with a prominent pale central vein. It is very comfortable in a paludarium, where it forms a 0.5 m high flower head with red flowers. Lobelia can be cultivated in aquariums and paludariums. It thrives beautifully in muddy soil as well as underwater. It tolerates temperatures from 15 to 28 °C and can also be kept in a pond. It thrives best at 20-23°C. It does well in soft to medium hard water with a pH between 6.5 and 7.2.Without adequate light the leaves turn yellow, but in bright light the undersides of the leaves turn purple-red. It is not particularly demanding, but regular water changes, fertilizer and CO₂ support its growth and allow it to grow 5 cm per month. Uncut, it grows above the water surface by forming overwater leaves, and may also flower. In the aquarium, lobelia should be planted in a group in the background, but it also works well as a foreground plant. It is used in lobelia avenues or to form showy thickets. Pruning is necessary to maintain a beautiful habit; use scissors to remove older leaves. You can also cut back the entire plant and use the cut tips as cuttings. A young plant can also be grown from an old leaf. Cuttings rooted in a paludarium can be transplanted to an aquarium. In an aquarium, stem pruning forces the plant to form side shoots. Planting: The plant must be removed from the cup and thoroughly rinsed from the gel under running water. This is best done by placing the plant in a container of lukewarm water. Most of the gel will then fall off by itself. Divide the contents of the cup into 3-4 cm lumps and then place them in the substrate..

It is ideal for the bank and shallow water zone from 0 to -15 cm. At 20-30 cm tall, it remains compact and combines well.Area of application: Pond edge / shallow water zoneHeight: approx. 20-30 cmWinter hardiness: Zone 1-2Pot: approx. 9 cmPlant specifications: Brings clear lines and structure to the edge of the pond without being too dominantCompact and easy to care for - ideal for smaller ponds and edgesSuitable for permanent planting thanks to good winter hardiness (zone 1-2)Technical dataBotanical name: Acorus calamus 'Gramineus'German name: Colourful calamusHeight: 20 / 30 cmDepth: 0 / -15 cmWinter hardiness zone: 1 / 2Planting depth: 0 to -15 cmAcorus calamus 'Gramineus' is a pond edge plant that is particularly characterised by its grassy, tidy growth. The variegated calamus is ideal for visually calming the transition between the water surface and the garden: It looks natural, but remains compact and controllable. This plant is a particularly harmonious choice in places where you want clean lines - for example along pond edges, in shallow bays or in small shoreline areas. The ideal place is in the shore to shallow water zone. The specified planting depth of 0 to -15 cm allows for flexible use: directly on the moist edge or standing slightly in the water. Thanks to its height of approx. 20 to 30 cm, the calamus remains pleasantly low so that it does not obstruct the view of the water surface. At the same time, it provides structure between higher-growing bank plants and lower ground cover plants. The variegated calamus is particularly valuable in pond design because it combines well with many other pond and marsh plants. It is suitable for both naturalistic planting schemes and more modern pond designs that emphasise clear shapes and calm areas. Thanks to its hardiness zone 1-2, it is also suitable for perennial pond edge planting. The plant is supplied in a pot (approx. 10 cm). For easy handling around the pond, we recommend using it in a plant basket - depending on the structure - so that the location remains stable and you can easily move the plant if necessary.Shipping note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the post or other unforeseen events (e.g. brown leaves or broken shoots). We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo Roco tip: Place the variegated calamus in the most beautiful spot where you walk past it every day: It looks particularly elegant when planted in small groups and its fine leaves are reflected in the water. For more control, we recommend using a planting basket - this will keep the edges neat and you can easily divide or reposition the plant later.

Especially at pond edges, an iris with its upright, sword-shaped leaves ensures clear lines: it frames the pond, segments the marginal zone, and makes the transition between water surface and garden visually harmonious. Thanks to the growth height of approx. 60 to 80 cm , Iris versicolor is particularly suitable for the mid- to background of pond edge planting, behind lower ground covers or flat-growing marginal plants. The flowering period from May to July (V–VII) brings the desired seasonal highlight to the pond. This means that in early summer, the marginal area is not only green but also gains a flowering accent that unfolds particularly beautifully by the water. For a harmonious overall appearance, planting in small groups or as a recurring element along the bank is recommended. This creates a calm rhythm that makes the pond appear seamless. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes Iris versicolor ideal for damp marginal zones and very shallow areas. Depending on pond construction, place the plant in damp bank earth or position it firmly in the shallow water area. The 9-cm pot is practical if you want to use several plants for a uniform marginal effect. For a neat, manageable pond edge, a planting basket is often a good solution – this keeps the water iris where it works best and allows for easy relocation if necessary. Thanks to zone 1–2, Iris versicolor is winter-hardy and thus well suited to perennial pond schemes. A solid choice if you wish to establish a long-lasting, beautiful marginal area with clear structure and seasonal flowering at your garden pond.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the utmost care, minimal damage may occur to plants in the post or through other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as bent shoots. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Plant Iris versicolor so that the plant is visible from your main vantage point – it looks best when the leaves ‘trace’ the edge and the growth is reflected slightly in the water. If you wish to test the location, start at 0 to –5 cm and lower the plant further to –15 cm if necessary.

Zoo-Roco tip: Use Phalaris ‘Picta’ to visually brighten dark corners at the pond edge – for example, next to stones or in front of evergreen plants. When the garden comes back to life after winter, it ensures a striking splash of colour by the water with its yellow flowers from March to May (III–V). Especially at the pond edge this is especially valuable: many marginal plants do not shoot up strongly until later – by contrast, the marsh marigold brings early colour and looks natural and harmonious in the process. With a height of about 30 to 40 cm the plant is ideal for the front to middle ground. It fits perfectly at pond edges, in damp border beds or in areas that are permanently moist to wet. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes it perfect for the bank and shallow water edge zone: directly in damp soil at the edge or standing slightly in water. Marsh marigold looks especially beautiful when you plant it in small groups – this creates a calm, natural area that visually softens the pond edge. The delivery in a 18-cm pot makes it easier to plant and gives the plant a good root volume from the start. If you want a very clear pond edge or want to keep the position flexible, a planting basket is a practical solution: this keeps the marsh marigold stable in the desired spot and can be easily moved if necessary. Thanks to winter hardiness zone 1–2, Caltha palustris is suitable for permanent pond installations in many regions and is an uncomplicated choice for a low-maintenance, natural pond edge planting.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it may happen that plants are slightly damaged during postal delivery or through other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken stems. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Plant the marsh marigold where you often pass by in spring – it’s a perfect starting point for the pond season. If your water level fluctuates greatly in spring, place the plant in a planting basket at 0 to –15 cm so it stays stable and grows reliably.

It can be planted at a depth of 0 to –40 cm and is hardy in zones 2–3.Area of use: Pond edge / Shore zone / Shallow water zoneHeight: approx. 60–80 cmPlanting depth: 0 to –40 cmHardiness/Zone: Zone 2–3Plant specifications: They give the pond edge a calm, natural structure and create a clean transition between the water and the garden. Thanks to a planting depth of 0 to –40 cm, calamus can be used flexibly from the damp edge right into the shallow water area. With a hardiness rating of 2–3, the plant is suitable for perennial ponds and remains easy to care for.Technical specifications:Botanical name: Acorus calamusCommon name: CalamusHeight (cm): 60 / 80 cmPlanting depth: 0 / –40 cmWinter hardiness: Zone 2 / 3Pot size: approx. 18 cmWith a height of approx. 60 to 80 cm, Acorus calamus is particularly well suited to the middle to background of the shoreline planting. It combines excellently with lower groundcovers and shallow-water plants that softly define the edge at the front, whilst the calamus behind provides height and structure. This creates a balanced overall look that appears natural and visually ‘frames’ the pond without obscuring the water surface. A major advantage is the flexible planting depth of 0 to –40 cm. This allows you to plant Acorus calamus in moist bank soil as well as in shallow water areas – depending on the layout of your pond. For many pond owners, a planting basket is a practical solution because it keeps the plant stable and makes it easier to move if necessary. This is particularly helpful in landscaped pond areas for keeping the edge zone well-maintained. Thanks to its specified hardiness (Zone 2–3), calamus is suitable for perennial pond schemes in many regions. This makes it a good choice if you are looking for a long-lasting, low-maintenance structural plant that reliably complements the pond edge and fits well into various planting concepts – from natural to modern.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive at your address healthy and undamaged. Despite the utmost care, plants may sustain minor damage during postal delivery or due to other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as snapped stems. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Place Acorus calamus in the shallow water zone so that the stems gently ‘frame’ the edge, but the view into the water remains unobstructed. If you wish to keep growth under control, place the calamus in a planting basket and position it at a depth of 0 to –40 cm – this keeps the shoreline tidy and allows for adjustments at any time.

It is one of seventeen North American Gratiola species and a member of the Plantaginaceae - goby family. It is related to the European Gratiola officinalis. In its natural habitat, Gratiola viscidula is a perennial marsh plant. It inhabits moist, sunny or semi-shaded sites. It is found on the banks of streams, in ditches, ponds and marshes. In nature, it blooms from June to October. This species is not commonly found in the aquarium trade, making it a rarity. It is a compact stem plant that forms dense rows or bright green lawns. It is suitable for both front ground and background. It has small, narrow leaves that appear spiny and look a little like conifers. The individual stems of the plant are thick, stiff and 1.5-2 cm wide. Because it grows in a temperate climate zone, it can be grown emersed in water bodies, ponds or pools outdoors. It tolerates a pH of 5.5-7.5. The plant is traditionally planted in the substrate. Gratiola Viscidula does not require CO₂ addition and likes regular water changes and fertilization.Planting: The plant must be removed from the cup and thoroughly rinsed from the gel under running water. This is best done by placing the plant in a container of lukewarm water. Most of the gel will then fall off by itself. Divide the contents of the cup into 1-2 cm lumps and then place them at a small distance on the selected items.
