Technical data
  • Botanical name: Typha angustifolia
  • English name: Narrow-leaved cattail
  • Flowering period: VII–IX
  • Hardiness zone: 2 / 3
  • Height: 80 / 120 cm
  • Planting depth: 0 to –40 cm

With Typha angustifolia (narrow-leaved cattail) you can create a natural and structured pond edge and marsh zone. The plant is particularly well suited to shallow bank areas, where its upright growth provides clear lines and creates a harmonious transition between water and garden. Thanks to its winter hardiness (zone 2–3), it is suitable for permanently designed pond areas and can – in the right place – remain part of your pond planting for many years.
The flowering period from July to September makes the narrow-leaved cattail an attractive companion in the summer and late season. It looks particularly beautiful in group planting or as a tranquil backdrop for flowering marsh plants. Thanks to the recommended planting depth of 0 to –40 cm, you can use it flexibly – directly at the edge or in shallow planting baskets in the water.
The plant is supplied in an approx. 18 cm pot (basket/pre-cultivated) and with a growth height of approx. 80–120 cm (depending on stage of development). For good establishment, it is advisable to place the plant securely after planting and to choose a location that provides enough space for its development.

Important note: Please do not plant this species in open water such as lakes or biotopes, as aquatic plants can spread depending on the environment. We pack your plants with great care so they arrive healthy. However, there may occasionally be slight transport damage during postal shipping (e.g. brown leaves or bent shoots). Such visual impairments are usually not critical for establishment.

Zoo-Roco tip: If you plant cattails in the pond, it is best to place them in a planting basket and restrict the root area. This keeps the bank zone tidy, and you can easily move or divide the plant if necessary.

Lobelia cardinalis 'Mini
Lobelia cardinalis 'Mini'Lobelia cardinalis 'Mini' is a green plant, recommended for the second level of the aquarium and for the paludarium. A very decorative species that is not particularly demanding.Difficulty of growing: easy Light requirements: medium CO₂ requirements: low Outgrown plant height: up to 20 cm Growth: medium Temperature: 15-28°C Placement in aquarium: second level Origin: North America Shell diameter: 6 cm Lobelia Cardinalis mini is a plant native to North America. In nature, it is found in wetlands and riverbanks. It is distributed from the Gulf of Mexico through the eastern states of the United States to southern Canada. It grows in the ground and has a well-developed root system. The feathery stems can develop auxiliary roots in leafless areas. Its small leaves are bright green, oval with a conspicuous pale central vein.Lobelias can be cultivated in aquariums and paludariums. It thrives in muddy soil as well as underwater. It tolerates temperatures from 15 to 28 °C and can also be kept in a pond. It thrives best at 20-23°C and requires soft to medium-hard water with a pH between 6.5 and 7.2.Without sufficient light, the leaves turn yellow, but in bright light the undersides of the leaves turn purple. It is not particularly demanding, but regular water changes, fertilizer and CO₂ support its growth. In the aquarium, lobelia should be planted in a group in the middle ground, but it is also well suited as a foreground plant. Pruning is necessary for the plant to grow well; use scissors to remove older leaves. You can also cut back the entire plant and use the cut tips as cuttings. Planting: The plant must be removed from the cup and thoroughly rinsed from the gel under running water. This is best done by placing the plant in a container of lukewarm water. Most of the gel will then fall off by itself. Divide the contents of the cup into 1-2 cm lumps and then set them at intervals of 1 to 2 cm.

It is exactly this clear form that makes it so popular: it brings structure to the shore planting, appears tidy and creates an exciting contrast to soft-growing marsh and flowering plants. The Cyprus grass appears especially harmonious at modern ponds or clearly defined shorelines – but it can also impress as a deliberate structural focal point in natural-style designs. With a height of approx. 60 to 80 cm, Cyperus alternifolius is suitable for the middle to background of edge plantings. It visually builds up the shore zone without completely covering the pond. The indicated flowering period from May to July (V–VII) complements the seasonal progression, in this plant the focus is usually on the foliage and shape. When planted in small groups it creates a calm, architectural effect; planted individually, the Cyprus grass becomes a real eye-catcher. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes the plant ideal for the shore and shallow water area. You can plant it directly in moist bank soil or place it in the very shallow water zone.Supplied in a 18 cm pot, you receive a strong root volume, which makes it easier to establish and ensures greater stability. For a neat pond edge and maximum control, a planting basket is a practical option – this way, the plant stays where it works best and can easily be moved if required.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the utmost care, plants may be slightly damaged during shipping or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as snapped branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant into open water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Plant Cyperus alternifolius so that the “umbrellas” are clearly visible at eye level – it looks best when slightly reflected in the water. For a neat pond edge, place the pot or basket at 0 to –15 cm depth and use a low ground cover at the front so the transition appears natural.

Sweet flag (18 cm) – Acorus calamus

Reaching a height of 60–80 cm, it is ideal as a background plant for shallow water and marsh areas. It can be planted at a depth of 0 to –40 cm and is hardy in zones 2–3.Area of use: Pond edge / Shore zone / Shallow water zoneHeight: approx. 60–80 cmPlanting depth: 0 to –40 cmHardiness/Zone: Zone 2–3Plant specifications: They give the pond edge a calm, natural structure and create a clean transition between the water and the garden. Thanks to a planting depth of 0 to –40 cm, calamus can be used flexibly from the damp edge right into the shallow water area. With a hardiness rating of 2–3, the plant is suitable for perennial ponds and remains easy to care for.Technical specifications:Botanical name: Acorus calamusCommon name: CalamusHeight (cm): 60 / 80 cmPlanting depth: 0 / –40 cmWinter hardiness: Zone 2 / 3Pot size: approx. 18 cmWith a height of approx. 60 to 80 cm, Acorus calamus is particularly well suited to the middle to background of the shoreline planting. It combines excellently with lower groundcovers and shallow-water plants that softly define the edge at the front, whilst the calamus behind provides height and structure. This creates a balanced overall look that appears natural and visually ‘frames’ the pond without obscuring the water surface. A major advantage is the flexible planting depth of 0 to –40 cm. This allows you to plant Acorus calamus in moist bank soil as well as in shallow water areas – depending on the layout of your pond. For many pond owners, a planting basket is a practical solution because it keeps the plant stable and makes it easier to move if necessary. This is particularly helpful in landscaped pond areas for keeping the edge zone well-maintained. Thanks to its specified hardiness (Zone 2–3), calamus is suitable for perennial pond schemes in many regions. This makes it a good choice if you are looking for a long-lasting, low-maintenance structural plant that reliably complements the pond edge and fits well into various planting concepts – from natural to modern.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive at your address healthy and undamaged. Despite the utmost care, plants may sustain minor damage during postal delivery or due to other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as snapped stems. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Place Acorus calamus in the shallow water zone so that the stems gently ‘frame’ the edge, but the view into the water remains unobstructed. If you wish to keep growth under control, place the calamus in a planting basket and position it at a depth of 0 to –40 cm – this keeps the shoreline tidy and allows for adjustments at any time.

Dwarf water lily - Nymphaea pygmaea rubra
Dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ red (18cm)The dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ brings an elegant splash of colour to the water’s surface with its red flowers. Thanks to its compact form, it is particularly suitable for smaller garden ponds as well as mini ponds and bowls. Ideal if you want a water lily that doesn’t take up too much space.Dwarf-form water lily – suitable for small water areasFlower colour: redGrowth: compact, for a controlled leaf areaArea of application: Garden pond, mini pond, tub/bowlTechnical dataBotanical name: Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’English name: Dwarf water lilyFlower colour: redPlanting depth: -10 to -40cmFlowering period: June to September Pot size: approx. 18 cmWith the dwarf water lily Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ you bring the typical water lily atmosphere into the garden – even if your pond is rather small or you want to plant in a mini pond or tub. Dwarf water lilies are designed to unfold a harmonious effect in a limited space: Floating leaves on the surface and an attractive blossom, without the water area being quickly completely covered. The ‘Rubra’ variety creates an elegant, easily visible splash of colour with its red flowers.Especially with smaller garden ponds, balanced planting is crucial. Water lilies that grow too vigorously can quickly dominate the surface and “close” the water effect. In comparison, a dwarf water lily remains more compact and is therefore a good choice if you want a calm, well-kept look and nevertheless do not want to do without the classic water lily eye-catcher. ‘Rubra’ is particularly effective when positioned so that you have a good view of the flowers from your seat or terrace – as the red shades clearly stand out against the water and greenery. For establishing, stable placement is important, ideally in a planting basket or a suitable container. This way the rhizome lies undisturbed, and you can adjust the position if necessary. If you are looking for a compact water lily with a strong colour, Nymphaea pygmaea ‘Rubra’ is a fitting choice for a natural yet controlled pond design.Note: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it may occur that plants are slightly damaged during postal delivery or by other unforeseen events. This includes both brown leaves and bent branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Put dwarf water lilies in a planting basket so you can easily adjust their position. If the plant is still small at first, start out higher (shallower) and lower them later – this often encourages quicker growth and flowering.

Especially for garden ponds, plants are needed that not only look attractive during short flowering periods, but also provide structure throughout the season. It visually outlines the shoreline without ‘closing’ the pond completely. It looks especially attractive when planted in small groups or as a recurring element along the edge. This creates a natural rhythm that harmoniously embeds the pond. The flowering period from June to August (VI–VIII) complements the season’s cycle; however, the emphasis is usually on the effect of the structure and foliage. Despite the greatest care, it can happen that plants are slightly damaged by the postal service or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as bent twigs. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open water such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Position the variegated water grass so that it ‘outlines’ the pond edge: plant it slightly offset along the shoreline so a natural but defined structure results. At a depth of 0 to –15 cm it stands firmly – in a plant basket, the edge remains particularly neat and you can easily move the plant as needed.

The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes Carex riparia perfect for the edge and shallow water zone. It can be planted directly in damp bank soil or placed in very shallow water – depending on the pond layout and the desired effect.Delivered in a 18-cm pot you receive a well-developed plant with solid root volume, making it easier to establish and offering more stability. If you want to keep the pond edge particularly tidy, a plant basket is a practical option: this keeps the sedge where it works best and can easily be moved if needed. Thanks to zone 1–2, Carex riparia is suitable for perennial pond planting in many regions and is a reliable choice if you want to combine lasting structure and naturalness at your garden pond.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive with you healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, it may occur that plants are slightly damaged during postal delivery or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken twigs. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Plant Carex riparia at the pond edge as a “green frame”: place 1–3 plants in a staggered arrangement so that the edge looks more natural. At depths of 0 to –15 cm, it stands stable – and in a plant basket, you keep the shoreline particularly easily under control.

As no specific planting depth is given, it is recommended to plant in moist bank soil or in areas that remain regularly damp – not directly into open water. The plant is supplied in a 9-cm pot, which is particularly suitable if you wish to plant several specimens to quickly achieve a harmonious overall appearance. Thanks to zone 1, Cardamine pratensis is robust and suitable for perennial planting – a good choice if you want to create a natural-looking and low-maintenance pond edge in the long term.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. The leaves are arranged like umbrellas and visually resemble small palm fronds – this creates a clear, yet still natural form that immediately enhances pond edges. Especially when there are many soft-growing plants around the pond, this sedge creates a calm counterpart and brings order to the overall look. With a height of approx. 60 to 80 cm, Carex muskingumensis is ideal for middle to background planting on the bank. It can visually "frame" the pond edges without completely obscuring the water surface. It is especially effective in small groups or as a recurring element along the shore – this creates a natural rhythm that makes the pond appear as if cast from one mould. The flowering period from June to August (VI–VIII) complements the season; with this plant, though, the main focus is usually on the attractive leaf structure. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes the palm-leaf sedge suitable for the shore and shallow water zones. Plant it in moist bank soil or place it in very shallow water – depending on how your pond is designed. Thanks to Zone 1–2, Carex muskingumensis is suitable for perennial pond installations in many regions and is an easy-care choice if you want to combine structure, height, and a natural appearance.Note on shipping: We make every effort to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite our greatest care, plants may be slightly damaged during postal delivery or due to other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as bent branches. We accept no liability for this. Do not plant in open water such as lakes or biotopes. Zoo-Roco tip: Plant the palm-leaf sedge so that it "frames the pond" from your main viewing axis – for example, to the left and right of a seating area overlooking the water. At a depth of 0 to –15 cm it appears particularly natural, and in a plant basket its shape remains neat and can be corrected at any time.

Bachbunge (9 cm) – Veronica beccabunga
Veronica beccabunga – Brooklime for pond edge & banksVeronica beccabunga (Brooklime) is a low-growing pond-edge plant for damp banks and the shallow water zone. It is suitable for a planting depth of 0 to –15 cm and remains pleasantly compact at a height of 10–20 cm. The flowering period runs from May to September (V–IX).Flowering period: V–IX (May to September)Hardiness/Zone: Zone 1–2Height: approx. 10–20 cmPot size: approx. 9cmSpecifications for the plant:They visually green pond edges and stream courses softly and naturally, without obstructing the view of the water. Thanks to the long flowering period V–IX, the border zone remains lively for many weeks. With zone 1–2, brooklime is suitable for perennial, low-maintenance pond plantings.Technical data:Botanical name: Veronica beccabungaGerman name: BrooklimeFlowering period: V–IXWinter hardiness zones: Zone 1 / 2Height: approx. 10–20 cmPlanting depth: 0 to –15 cmWith Veronica beccabunga (Brooklime) you are choosing a compact, natural-looking plant for garden ponds, streams and damp banks. Especially at pond edges there are often transitions that can quickly appear ‘harsh’ – for example at stones, liner edges or between plant baskets. Brooklime helps to visually connect these areas: it grows low, has a calm appearance, and provides a natural finish without overloading the pond edge.A major advantage is the long flowering period from May to September (V–IX). This keeps the edge zone attractive for much of the season and gives a well-maintained appearance. Thanks to the low growth height of approx. 10 to 20 cm, Veronica beccabunga is particularly suitable for the foreground of bank plantings or as a ‘filler plant’ in the shallow water zone. It can be excellently combined with taller structural plants that may stand behind, while the brooklime in the foreground softly outlines the edge visually. The recommended planting depth of 0 to –15 cm makes the plant very flexible: place it directly in moist bank soil or in a very shallow water area, depending on the pond layout. For a neat pond edge and easy care, a planting basket is often helpful, especially if you want to reposition the plant later. For growth, a consistently moist location is crucial. Thanks to zone 1–2, Veronica beccabunga is suitable for perennial pond installations and is a good choice if you are looking for a low-growing, uncomplicated plant for damp areas that integrates harmoniously into a natural pond design.Note on shipping: We do our utmost to ensure that our plants arrive healthy and undamaged. Despite the greatest care, plants may be slightly damaged by postal delivery or other unforeseen events. This includes brown leaves as well as broken twigs. We do not accept liability for this. Do not plant in open waters such as lakes or biotopes.Zoo-Roco tip: Place brooklime along the shore where you want to fill gaps – it looks especially natural when it ‘grows into’ stones. In very shallow areas (up to –15 cm), a planting basket is practical so that the plant stands stably and you can keep design control easily.

At the same time, it provides structure between higher-growing bank plants and lower ground cover plants. The variegated calamus is particularly valuable in pond design because it combines well with many other pond and marsh plants.
