Why test?The degradation or mineralisation process of all organic substances in the aquarium and pond follows these stages: proteins > ammonium > nitrite > nitrate. By measuring these stages conclusions can be drawn about the “functioning” of the systems aquarium and pond. If the ammonium or nitrite level is too high it can lead to disturbances of the bacterial balance. Ammonium is not usually measurable in a maintained aquarium with an effective biological filter and in a correctly set up garden pond. Ammonium is an important plant nutrient and normally non-toxic for fish. But depending on the pH value ammonia, which is toxic for fish, can be formed from the ammonium ion.

Healthy aquarium / healthy pond with near-natural conditionsThe correct water values in the aquarium/pond depend on the fish population and the plants present. Even if the water looks clear, it may be contaminated. If the values are poor, diseases or algae can form in the aquarium/pond. For a healthy aquarium/pond with near-natural conditions, it is important to regularly check and adjust the water values.
JBL offers water tests in the form of rapid tests or color change tests for every water analysis. These determine a specific value or several values simultaneously. With these water tests, algae problems can be detected and negative nitrate, nitrite, potassium, magnesium values etc. can be determined.
Why test:Nitrite is produced when bacteria break down protein and ammonium. It is normally further processed into non-toxic nitrate. Nitrite (NO2) should not be measurable in aquarium and pond water. If nitrite is nevertheless measurable, the bacterial degradation process is disturbed and from a concentration of 0.4 mg/l it becomes dangerous or even fatal for fish, as nitrite blocks the oxygen transport in the blood of the animals. The appropriate phosphate content of the feed is essential for healthy bone formation. Too little phosphate and calcium will lead to bone deformities.
When the young fish are large enough, supplementation with live Artemia (brine shrimp) is ideal.
