The hornwort is a cosmopolitan plant that can be found in many bodies of water around the world. We found the free-floating stem plant in huge populations in a tributary of the Rio Miranda on the edge of the Pantanal in South America. The growth rate of the stems is enormous, so they have to be constantly pruned. Ceratophyllum is considered a "miracle weapon" against algae growth. The explanation is quite simple: the plant is a strong nutrient consumer and removes the algae's food source. Most aquarium fish come from tropical waters and need water temperatures between 22 and 30 °C. In community aquariums with fish/invertebrates from different regions, a water temperature of 24-26 °C has shown to be effective. 30 °C is only suitable for some fish breeding (e.g. discus fish). Many shrimp species come from cooler waters and do not tolerate temperatures of 25-30°C. The water temperature should be set with a "regulated heater" which regulates the temperature automatically. For this purpose, there are rod-shaped heaters which are fixed in the aquarium (JBL ProTemp s) in various wattage and external heaters/in-line heaters which are integrated in the water-returning hose of an external filter (JBL ProTemp e) in two wattage. The advantage of external heaters is that it is one less product to be placed INSIDE the aquarium and the distribution of heat in the aquarium is more even. In addition, the digital display of the external heater always clearly shows the current water temperature. Under gravel heating is NOT used to set the water temperature. When water evaporates, evaporative cooling is produced. This physical process is used here. Many freshwater fish and plants do not tolerate temperatures above 30 °C and even 27-30 °C is already a strain. Corals also die at temperatures above 30 °C. It is therefore essential to cool the water at high temperatures.The fans cause a stream of air to flow over the water surface, which leads to evaporation. That's why a heat cable from Repti Planet is an ideal solution. It is installed outside the terrarium and when connected correctly, it provides permanent heat. We recommend using a thermometer to monitor the temperature inside the terrarium. Make sure the temperature is in the right range for your species.
