Optimum conditions for keeping pets are often defined by the size of the enclosure – but no matter how spacious the enclosure, every animal enclosure is a compromise. It is not the limited living space that is the problem for the animals, but the "all-round care": behaviours such as foraging and enemy avoidance, which fill a large part of the animals' activity times in the wild, are almost completely eliminated in human hands. The terms "behavioural" and "environmental enrichment" are used in zoos to describe measures that enrich the animals' behaviour and habitat and promote their activity.
