This can be supplied via appropriate supplements or can be produced by the animal in the skin with the help of UVB radiation.No additional vitamin D needs to be administered via food if the animal is offered the correct quantity and quality of UVB radiation. With sufficient UVB irradiation of healthy animals, vitamin D deficiency usually does not occur. Vitamin precursors that are ingested with food (these are mainly found in the muscle and fatty tissue of feeder animals and plants) are converted in the skin under the influence of sunlight (or UVB radiation) and warmth into a precursor of vitamin D3 and finally in the kidney tissue into the active form of vitamin D3.
