Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) large
Drosophila, also known as fruit flies, are the smallest flies that are commercially bred as food animals.
- flightless
- for amphibians, small reptiles and young spiders
- also for small ornamental birds
Fruit flies are the smallest flies that are commercially bred as food animals.
However, these flies were originally bred for genetic research, as the reproduction duration of the flies is very short. In order to handle the animals more easily, specimens with crippled wings were bred out. As a result, the flies have lost their ability to fly. Drosophilas are often fed to amphibians, small offspring of reptiles and young spiders, but also to small ornamental birds.
