Der in der Regel 15 bis 18 cm, höchstens 30 cm lange Körper ist schlank und seitlich wenig abgeflacht. Er ist der kleinste Fisch mit Fettflosse. Stinte haben einen leicht durchscheinenden Körper. Der Rücken und Seiten sind graugrün bis rosa, die Flanken silbrig glänzend. Die Schwanzflosse hat einen dunklen Rand. Der Stint wird bis zu 6 Jahre alt. Eigentümlich ist der intensive, an frische Gurken erinnernde Geruch, der dem Fisch auch den Namen gab, abgeleitet von „stinken“.
Hauptsächliches Fanggebiet ist die Nord- und Westküste Europas.

Die von uns gelieferten Stinte haben in der Regel eine Größe von 5-8cm.
