A substrate is not usually used in quarantine aquariums as it is easier to clean. However, the mule and dirt must be vacuumed out daily.
In normal aquariums, the substrate fulfils both aesthetic and other functions. The substrate provides the necessary habitat for bacteria that break down harmful substances.
For plants, the substrate provides the support and, with the nutrient soil, also the food for growth. The height must be between 5 and 7 cm.
For bottom-dwelling fish, but also other species that like to burrow in the substrate or need the gravel for a breeding trough, this is also required by law. Animals must be able to satisfy their basic needs.
The substrate must be adapted to the fish species.
100cm x 50cm x7cm = 35'000 : 1000 = 35 litres
Depending on the product, the quantity is written in litres or kilograms. In the case of kilograms, you must calculate the quantity x 1.5 (as gravel is heavier than water) - so in our example this would be 52.5 kg.
If you buy a culture medium, you can subtract this amount. Always buy enough substrate, as it is difficult to set up if you have too little at home. We also take back whole bags.
A common gravel grain size is between 2 and 6 mm, which covers most aquarium biotopes. Gravel coarser than 12 mm is rarely used.
In nature, however, gravel is not always the same size, so a mixture can also be used. This looks more natural than if the gravel always has the same diameter.
When buying aquarium gravel, make sure that it is not sharp-edged. Corydoras and other fish with barbels like to dig in the substrate and can otherwise injure themselves.
You can also create a corner with aquarium sand. Sand in large layers is pressed tightly together and can lead to oxygen-free zones and the roots die off. This can lead to putrefaction centres with the formation of H2S, which can be fatal for the fish when released.
